I would assume MJ Rivers is far far more advanced at this point. There is no comparison between Texas 5A and Illinois 5A. Different planets.

I would assume so as well but

quarterbacks rated better than Rivers have failed in Div I and quarterbacks rated worse than Taylor have excelled.

Let the competition commence. Thomas, Taylor and Rivers. Will be interesting.

This may be the real start of the turnaround. If all three prove to be adequate or better, we should be able to move the ball, score points, and keep our
defense off the field. And when our defense is on the field after we score, they may play like mad dogs just to get off the field and watch our offense control the ball again.

None of our QB's really gets me excited, but Rivers to me is the most intriguing prospect. I think with the new spread system, and a tight O-Line; any of our quarterbacks can be serviceable in scoring points.
I give the edge to Rivers down the road.

I think more of a major deal in getting Taylor signed is just having one of the area's best players at the University. It helps with recruiting in the long run

The closer to the LOS you play, the more important your position is. I think we've really focused on the D/O line the past couple recruiting cycles. THat's what changes a program around. Especially in the B1G. I think JGJ could've been a decent QB given a good OLine.

I think we are seeing the turn around. Probably doesn't happen this year, but 2019 should give us a clear view of the future of this program.

A little nervous about the lack of commitments since the first signing day. A bunch of current players decided on transferring, opening up a number of scholarship spots, with little smoke on who is going to claim those new scholarships. There was buzz about Manuel Allen (WR - CA), but that seems to have died down. Looks like Dayven Coleman (S - TX) is going to Arizona. Robertson (OLB - CA) is a possibility, but odds are probably still for Arizona State.

For the positives, Kenyon Sims seems like a likely add to the class. Matt Robinson (QB - CA) is coming in for a visit. Offer went out to Brock Purdy (QB - AZ), but haven't heard much since then (seems like a Iowa State lean). Jacob Hollins (ILB - CA) is coming in for a visit this weekend. His ranking is 3000+, so is likely a project at a position that needs a couple immediate contributors.

Other worrisome developments are the lack of clarity on Tolson's admisson issues. Is he having serious concerns? Or just that he can't be admitted until after the spring semester? Would be a massive blow if he isn't part of the class. Also, Illinois needs a DE in this class badly.

**My apologies for the more pessimistic post than normal. TL;DR, was hoping for a strong finish to this class than what is currently transpiring.

Ideal would be to get a 5th year transfer, have them and Cam battle for starting. Taylor and Rivers have a battle for 3rd string.

This may be the real start of the turnaround. If all three prove to be adequate or better, we should be able to move the ball, score points, and keep our
defense off the field.

Rather than having all 3 be adequate, or needing to start a grad transfer and just kick the problem down the road a year, let's shoot for one Kurt Kittner sort of situation where they come in and solidify the position for the next 3 -4 years & we don't need to have this discussion again next year at this time.

+1 on the offensive line, I just don't think we had much of a chance with any quarterback with as many freshman lineman as we started. But the line getting older/bigger/stronger will help the QB position & the run game next year. We may still be another year away there, but hopefully significantly improved.

What is this I hear? An Illini football fan is nervous prior to signing day? I find this difficult to believe.

I like the post about us focusing hard early on both lines. Nice to see how our second recruiting class is shaping up.

As far as this fall goes, I don't think we'll be worse and we might show some signs of life but I think once again depth and injuries will dog us in the third and fourth quarters. Still it will be telling to see how our youngsters are developing this fall.

I agree with poster's thoughts on 2019 being a breakout year after Lovie's third recruiting class. 2019 and 2020 should be fun to watch. Let's see some optimism here! Optimism on Illini football forum... almost as funny as the nervous illini thing. Hell I don't even REMEMBER what Orange koolaid tastes like. Beckman did that. He ruined orange koolaid for me.

Interesting guy. Looks and plays like Flutie/Manziel. Hard to believe he's anywhere near 6'1" as listed. On the other hand, if he really were, he'd be a 4*-5* player based on how he throws and his stats.

JSerra is a decent program that plays in an absolutely brutal conference that includes national powers Santa Ana Mater Dei and St. John Bosco. If he has managed to be a three-year starter and competed against those teams (which usually are loaded with future P5 athletes) he should be able to compete most any where. Size is his issue. Interesting prospect. Seems more like a FCS player, but who knows.

Could someone start a target list for 2019 on who we are after at the moment? Would be greatly appreciated

So the same height as Russell Wilson and only 1" shorter than Drew Brees. ;)

I like comps that fit a narrative :thumb:

Also, there is no rational thought behind this (but it's the internet...so why would there be rational thought?), but this quietness before the signing period actually makes me think we might get a couple of surprises to close out this class. I hope so at least.
