So... elephant in the room.

If TDV is trying to stay and Leary also wants to commit.. what decision gets made here? Do coaches tell TDV it's time to move on? 2 QB system? (just joking )

Strange times to think the staff could have their pick between such great QBs considering where this program was 2 short seasons ago.

They wouldn't be applying for a waiver if that was the case.

I get it. Chase has a decision to make. Come back and get a guaranteed big amount of money to play one more year in college and avoided a loaded RB class in this years draft and maybe move up to a 3rd round pick and risk injury. Or go in the 5th-7th round and try and make a roster.
I wasn't aware that the RB class was particularly loaded, since he lead all rushers for 12 of 13 weeks... But I also get it... it's a tough and difficult choice.. But in the final moment, it is HIS CHOICE ! !

Nothing finalized with Leary and NCAA. Still working on specific language in the waiver. Still in contact with Leary but not pushing for anything right now.
Here's my concern:

I don't trust the NCAA and would hate to miss out on a very good QB only to have the NCAA deny Tommy's waiver.

Why are we only now wiring on the paperwork for an extra year? I would have thought we would had that ready to go before the end of the season.

That's my biggest fear is that we will miss out on both, then what?

Just a refresher for some worried about transfers

The transfer portal opens the first day after the championship teams were selected. This year it opened on Dec 5th and will close 45 days later on Jan 18th, 2023. The spring is a 15 day period from May 1st to May 15th.

Exceptions are graduate transfers can enter at any time and players whose head coach has been fired have an immediate 30 day window to enter the portal.

This does not mean players have to transfer during these periods. Players just have to enter the portal during these times and are eligible to transfer at any time. Ton of prospects in the portal and it isn't running dry (even at the QB position ;) )

DeVito was a 4 star recruit and .8915 recruit out of high school. They upgrade the rankings and he was a 3 star and .8200 when he was in the transfer portal. Love to see DeVito back another season but we will be fine.

Everyone relax. Illinois isn’t going to get caught with their D*** in their hand waiting for a waiver. And a lawyer has been working on the language of the waiver for a decent amount of time now. Wording plays a huge part in the ncaa decision process. It’s not like BB just emails them and asks for an extra year.

You have to also remember that the NCAA has always treated QB waivers for anything far better than they do any other position. Luke Ford is a good case to look at. The year he got denied a waver because he "wasn't within the mileage" of the rule to his grandpa their was a QB that transferred into Ohio State and had NO family in the area etc or any other plausible reason to get granted a waiver to play right away and yet he did because he was a QB. So if TDV does get his waiver just chalk it up to him being a QB and nothing more.

Looking at the All Big 10 football first and second teams I noticed that there were 9 players from the state of Illinois, none of which played for the Illini. Five of them were 1st team offense. The positive takeaway is that there is a lot of talent in the state of Illinois. Hopefully we will be able to recruit some of it going forward, as I believe we are doing a much better job.

That had little to do with the respective positions and almost everything to do with the name on the jerseys they were asking to put on.
