Not trying to be a wet blanket, but TDV's return is dependent on a waiver. And expecting the NCAA to make an expedient call there seems, I don't know, foolish? Meanwhile, a lot of QBs who can fill the hole quite well are gonna be gone. Someone walk me off the ledge.

I love TDV. Had a great season. I'd love to have him back. Think he'd do better, maybe a lot better, in year 2. But really fearing the opportunity cost of this gambit.
Relax

We cant let Leary get away if we have a great shot at getting him. I hope we don't wait and see what happens.

I can see your point here especially with the talent level of Leary however would you rather have TDV who already has experience with the system vs. having Leary come in and learn a whole new system and who knows if it will work out?

I'm hoping we wouldn't be hearing this rumor unless the waiver was a high likelihood

Maybe. But the shelf life on RBs isn’t exactly long. Feels like the move for them is usually to go as soon as they can reasonably go to increase the length of their earnings.
True. And RBs are not the draft priority like they used to be. The NFL is a QB/passing game first and foremost.

Also, this is from an article from Apr 2020. I guess it depends on how much Chase gets with NIL (and other factors) vs making a team and getting guaranteed money.

https://heavy.com/sports/2020/04/nfl-draft-rookie-salary-4-5-6-7-rounds/
"Finally, seventh-round picks secure a salary ranging from $638,424 to $628,873. The first seventh-round pick is paid a $638,424 salary and a four-year, $3.4 million contract. The final pick of the NFL draft is often referred to as Mr. Irrelevant but the player still receives a $628,873 salary as part of a four-year, $3.37 million contract. "

Maybe as simple as the author being incorrect, but this profile on Chase from The Athletic claims his NIL opportunities are limited? Is this wrong or is there more nuance to it?

Quote from about halfway down: "His visa status as an international student prevents him from capitalizing on any individual NIL opportunities on U.S. soil — you don’t need a master’s in marketing to devise a campaign around a star running back named Chase — but attention hasn’t been hard to come by after rushing for 733 yards through five games this fall."

Technically not wrong. But like anything with money….there are ways around it.

But he can, and has, capitalized on NIL while home in Canada.

Also remember NFL contacts are not guaranteed. So I think you could make around that in NIL and hopefully move up a couple rounds and get a better contract

I think when college players look at their opportunities the thought process that was true a few years ago are not the same

In reference to Chase brown:

1st rb taken in 2021 in the 5th round was signed for 335k and paid about 750 over 4 years. About 3.5m against the NFL cap. Even in the 5th round that's a lot of $$$. What is is NIL going to be? I'd guess comparable for it to make sense to stay? That's crazy $$$ for a college "kid".

When I last checked late in the regular season Chase was not a Top 100 NFL draft pick. Only Spoon made the cut, somewhere just inside #100.
Correct. But he is being mentioned as a top 10 RB in the draft: 2023 NFL draft rankings: Mel Kiper's top prospects.

He is a good back, but he's not better than what he is right now. I don't see how him coming back improves his status. I hope he does, but I don't think that's what's best for him right now.

I would like to see TDV again. I don't know how to unravel all this eligibility thing. Can somebody explain how he could get a 7th year of eligibility? Or am I completely missing something?

If the numbers mentioned earlier for NIL - $750k to $1m - are accurate, that's a pretty big incentive to stay another year.
