hmmm ... LifeWallet that couldn't make its bond payments and had to negotiate to defer and "revealed in an April 14 filing that it had identified "material weaknesses in internal controls" in its accounting. The resulting errors were significant enough that the company told investors they could no longer rely on its financial statements ranging from June 30, 2022, to September 30, 2022." over promised purchase of receivables as scalable. Investors are not too happy with Ruiz spending their money on athletes when he cant pay bond interest. didn't think he would be allowed to continue signing LifeWallet deals
I heard Miami's NIL has its issues (see Jalen Rashada)

“NIL” is the new “$hady” (when we lose a recruiting battle)

it’s pretty hard to recruit against a school that can offer the players six figure NIL deals .

one wonders just how sustainable the current rules are .

while I’m glad we didn’t lose him to OSU, I just don’t like the way NIL has evolved and dramatically changed recruiting .

Ok, time to stay positive guys. It sucks that we lost out on Lightfoot, but we still have done a very good job in recruiting, And when we have a couple of winning seasons in a row, we will these battles. Let's finish this class out strong.

I'm the exact opposite. I love this newest iteration of recruiting. I hope the players get even bigger deals. I love the "Don't listen to state rules" memo, too.

yea, but this is a football thread
I get it, but I have to interject against the "poor little Illinois" stuff whenever I see it.

We're just spending a much higher portion of our heavyweight NIL kitty on the sport our donor community cares more about winning recruitments for.

Of course Miami is also spending plenty on Instagram model rotation players for its WBB team, but, y'know, Miami gonna Miami.

This is spot on. One good season and a good draft is not going to change the minds of a lot of kids, especially the 4* and 5* kids. We need some sustained success to do that. This program has been mediocre or bad almost through its entire Big Ten history, save for a handful of seasons....four seasons of 9+ wins since the Big Ten became the Big Ten in 1953. A good, solid, committed coaching staff and some good, solid, committed kids coming in to build some sustained success and we will begin to win these battles. Like several have said...its a huge step to even be in the running with the blue bloods on some of these like Lightfoot. Let's win 8, 9, 10 games this year and go from there.

I don’t begrudge the players getting paid above the table - many always did secretly anyway

but do you think this wild wild west is sustainable?
and if not , how does it get controlled ?

A couple things….If it were all above table, I’d be great with it. Obviously it’s not.

Is it sustainable… I sure don’t think so because there are no rules except whatever each school wants them to be.

How does it get controlled…..only by congress at this point. There needs to be laws that will hold up in court, not rules made by a completely impotent NCAA.

Makes a difference when they offer to move the family … Lot of jobs down there in Miami I hear …
I wonder what the full package they put together looks like. Probably pretty sweet. But I'd be wary of a deal with a U booster. South Florida has earned it's 'sunny place for shady people' reputation.
On the other hand, I don't blame him or other athletes for maximizing their NIL deals now. They may never make a big NFL payday.
