Illinois Football Staff Thread

OC: Mike Sherman
RB/TE: Nathan Scheelhaase
WR: Mike Bellamy
OL: Harry Hiestand

DC: Leslie Frazier
DL: Mike Phair
LB: John Holecek
DB: Mikal Smith

ST: Dave Toub

I would be fine switching Hecklinski or Brewster for Sheelhasse, but this would be a dream staff for me

I don't see Lovie demoting Phair. At worst, I think he will be co-dc.

Unless you really think you can land Aaron Morehead (doubt it), Bellamy makes a lot of sense.

Bridge guy to the new staff, probably the most popular coach (among players/recruits) on the past staff, existing connections to several high quality area recruits.

AND, he's comparatively cheap. Raise him $50-100K for his troubles and he's still topping out at $200K. That's 5% of the total pool, giving you a chance to further incentivize potential staff targets.

Why is Moorehead better than Bellamy? I have not heard great things about Moorehead as a coach. I could obviously be wrong.

Here's my semi-realistic dream staff (semi-realistic as in I doubt it's going to happen, but all the guys listed are logical possibilities):

OC/QB - Pep Hamilton
RB - Nathan Scheelhaase
WR - Mike Bellamy
TE/Recruiting Coordinator - Tim Brewster
OL/Asst HC - Harry Hiestand

DC - Leslie Frazier
DL/Asst DC - Mike Phair
LB - John Holecek
CB - Gill Byrd
S - Mikal Smith

ST - Dave Wannestedt :peace:

not to be that guy, there can only be 9 coaches on staff. Other coaches have to campus recruiting and non official capacities like Lox is down in Alabama

Hiestand and/or Brewster would both be upper deck grand slams as part of the staff, but I would be leery of giving either one (or both) OC-type responsibilities when neither has done that in the past.

We know Lovie. He may well embrace read option principles, but he is not going to run a crazy tempo, he's not going to throw the ball all over the field, he is going to want to run the ball, control the game, and let his defense choke the life out of the opponent. Zany offensive schemes give you some margin for error. We're going to have to be excellent in schemes and game-planning and execution to move the ball effectively. Hiestand is as good of an offensive line coach as there is anywhere in football and Brewster is a nationally elite recruiter, but the fact that both guys are such renowned commodities and neither is a coordinator at this stage in their careers tells you something.

I am not saying he couldn't be successful. But this would really worry me with Lovie. I am hoping for an experienced OC. that can run things on their own.

I agree with both of you. Hiestand not being an OC at this point tells us something. Swing for the fences to get him, but it's not realistic as ND would match or up the offer.

The Hecklinski obsession is even weirder than the Bellamy thing. Bellamy is an alum and has brought in some of our more talented players over the last few years, so I can understand that even if I disagree.

We dragged Hecklinski out of Division 2 like five weeks ago. Why does anyone see this guy as some marketable commodity? Because he was like the Miss Elizabeth during the brief period of Hokeamania at Michigan? How does that make sense?

I just want Hecklinski as recruiting coordinator. Nothing more

I am ok not having him on staff. I was allocating the 4 million and thought him and Nathan would get about the same amount. I figured Sherman, Frazier, Toub, and Hiestand would be around 2.6-2.8mil for the 4 of them. There still is a budget and I think his Illinois contacts and holdovers would be fine for the staff. I would prefer Nathan but Hecklinski is good by me. There will be people on the staff making 200K. Finding those coaches is important too.

Hiestand: 500K
Toub: 550K
Sherman: 850K
Frazier: 800K
Phair: 450K
Holecek: 300K
Malik Smith: 200K
Bellamy: 185K
Sheelhaase: 165K

That is 4 Million. If Holecek were to come at 250K and they paid Hecklinski 220k like before in place of Nathan I would be ok with that as well. I trust Lovie but this just my hope on something that could possibly happen

I don't think this 4 mil is just for the 9 coaches is it? Wouldn't that include support staff? Such as the S&C coaches and other personnel.

I understand retaining Phair, but any idea why Lovie is keeping Nate around when he's got the resources to build an all-star staff? Is Nate really that good of a coach in his third year that he'd rather have him vs a guy like Bellamy or someone else with way more experience? Is this solely to keep an "Illinois guy" on staff, and if so, why Nate vs Bellamy?

I'm not dogging on Nate, I'm just curious about the reasoning since I'm unaware of any ties between Lovie and Nate.

Current @IlliniFootball co-defensive coordinator Mike Phair will remain on staff but possibly in different role, source tells @NFLonFOX

Sherman last coached with @MiamiDolphins, Holt is @RAIDERS asst oline coach, Hayes-Stoker was @TBBuccaneers WRs coach in 2015

Source tells @NFLonFOX that Miles Smith not expected to join father Lovie's @IlliniFootball staff. Likely to pursue master's degree instead

Someone tell me if I'm crazy, but wouldn't Sherman be just a phenomenal fit - both in terms of what he brings to the table and the fact that he's been a P5 head coach recently (in TX, no less)?

Bring the Sherm, He got a raw deal at A&M and he was a great coach for the Packers when he was in the NFL. Unfortunately he was a Gawd awful GM. I also like that he recruited a ton of talent and has been working with kids still even in his semi-retired state. I think it tells you alot about him and may answer some of the questions about how he relates to kids and stuff.

I would be happy with these three. I would like to see someone known as a great recruiter in that group though.

He recruited very well in the state of Texas as A&M's head coach, and the year that got him fired was one of the hard luck seasons of all time.

I was never a huge fan of his as the Packers head coach, but criticizing a guy who was 57-39 as an NFL head coach as a qualification to be offensive coordinator at Illinois feels a tad ridiculous.

I think it's a great fit, especially with the ties to Texas. Both he and Tedford have a connection to Aaron Rodgers (Tedford coached him at Cal, Sherman drafted him with the Packers), and Sherman is basically responsible for turning Ryan Tannehill from a WR into a decent NFL QB.

I'd be ecstatic with either Tedford or Sherman. Both had consistently top-20 recruiting classes in their primes.

Did some quick research on Sherman's offenses at Texas A&M. Here are their offensive FEI ratings around his tenure (bolded).

2007 - 70th
2008 - 65
2009 - 33
2010 - 39
2011 - 19

2012 - 2
2013 - 1
2014 - 15
2015 - 85

Sumlin of course took over in 2012, and had a ton of success using Sherman recruits like Johnny Manziel, Mike Evans, Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, Cedric Ogbuehi, and Christine Michael.

I think this is some good evidence that Sherman knows what he is doing in the college game.
