Did some quick research on Sherman's offenses at Texas A&M. Here are their offensive FEI ratings around his tenure (bolded).

2007 - 70th
2008 - 65
2009 - 33
2010 - 39
2011 - 19

2012 - 2
2013 - 1
2014 - 15
2015 - 85

Sumlin of course took over in 2012, and had a ton of success using Sherman recruits like Johnny Manziel, Mike Evans, Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, and Christine Michael.

I think this is some good evidence that Sherman knows what he is doing in the college game.

This data says to me that the Illini need to bring in Kevin Sumlin. Why hasn't this topic been discussed?!

@alexmarvez: "Current @IlliniFootball co-defensive coordinator Mike Phair will remain on staff but possibly in different role, source tells @NFLonFOX"

DL Coach?

Had a hard time believing that record, so I went to fact check it. You're right, he went 1-10 in HS last year...

Yes, but Nauset is on cape cod. The highschool is a stones throw from the beach - drove right by it last year. He has all spring/summer to enjoy the beach and the ocean when not distracting himself with football. I dont think he went there because Nauset is a powerhouse (there not). It is a nice retirement life for sure (if that it what he is looking for). If he wants to get back into working then I think this is a good fit. Power 5 under former NFL coach. Way less responsibilities then the head coach and much easier to walk away when he is ready. Question to me would be how long would he stay.

still holding out hope for Leslie Frazier as DC with Sherman as OC. and then some young highly regarded recruiters to fill out the position staff

The last part seems key if we have three NFL-lifer 50-and-over guys in the three big chairs. We had better be pulling guys off of existing Power Five staffs with a $4 million budget.

It shows me Sumlin's best success as with Sheman's recruits. Also shows me Sherman had the needle pointing up most years.

+1. And with the defense that Lovie Smith should have here in a few years, I think anybody in Champaign would sign up for the nations 30-50th ranked offense.

That's my big fear here. Considering spring practices have just started, how easy will it be to pull proven guys from college staffs? 4 million is a lot of cash, but how much extra will be necessary to pull the sought after assistants away at this time of year?

I have a feeling that Andrew Hayes-Stoker will be an adept recruiter. He's 37 years old, African-American, and seems like a fun personality.

Sherman was hand picked by Ron Wolfe to replace himself as GM while he was still the HC at the time. He is a teacher and fits the brainy football coach image that would be great to have represent our university. That and he knows a few things about great QB play...

Please please please , pretty please with sugar on top give us Sherman as OC . He knows EXACTLY how to help Lovie get started with some of the admin issues in the college game AND he knows how to recruit elite talent .

And Lovie won't meddle with the offense. Love the idea of Sherman running the offense.

footballscoop reporting that Lovie's son will not join the staff, so he can pursue a masters degree.

That's fantastic. With all due respect to Lovie and his family, many saw his nepotism as a weakness in Tampa Bay.

Seems like a longshot since he currently has a head coaching gig at FIU, but any chance with the recent Ron Turner lovefest, he could be a candidate. Internet says he is only making 600k, he is 3 years into losing records at FIU so his seat may be a bit hot, seems to be a favorite of both Smith & Whitman. The whole former head coach bit could be a bit awkward as well. But if you told me last week we would have Lovie as our head coach I would have called you all crazy.

It's all about relationships. Lovie is a great guy to work for and that sells itself no matter what time of the year it is. So that is not a issue if the cash is competitive.
