Had a hard time believing that record, so I went to fact check it. You're right, he went 1-10 in HS last year...

http://www.nausetsports.org/main/team/id/20044

Yes, but Nauset is on cape cod. The highschool is a stones throw from the beach - drove right by it last year. He has all spring/summer to enjoy the beach and the ocean when not distracting himself with football. I dont think he went there because Nauset is a powerhouse (there not). It is a nice retirement life for sure (if that it what he is looking for). If he wants to get back into working then I think this is a good fit. Power 5 under former NFL coach. Way less responsibilities then the head coach and much easier to walk away when he is ready. Question to me would be how long would he stay.

Just read theMMQB piece on Sherman and found this:

"Sherman admits his current stint is as much about soul-searching as it is staying busy. He might not be done with the NFL just yet. “If the right opportunity presents itself,” he says, “and if it’s OK with my family.” Then again, he just doesn’t know yet. He needs time to keep breathing."

Now ILL isn't the NFL but we do have an NFL coach . .

Per source, this guy has thrown his hat into the ring to join the staff in some capacity...

Interesting to me that Watson played free safety in college, but has been on the offense of side of the ball for most of his coaching life. Speaking from first hand observation, watching the Texas offense and quarterback play in person here in Austin the last two years... it was pretty bad.

Illinois: Sources tell FootballScoop Lovie Smith is targeting 49ers inside linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson for his defensive coordinator role at Illinois. Nickerson was on Lovie’s staff at Tampa the past two seasons.

Seems like Lovie will be going after a lot of coaches he is familiar with. Nickerson also coached with Lovie in Chicago.

Close friend of Rick George's, ironically. Would make a fine QB coach. Still somewhat leery about building this whole ship out of unemployed 50-somethings.

Yep. Not saying Lovie is targeting him, just had heard he has reached out to Illinois to gauge their interest.

Hardy Nickerson would be amazing. He's done well in his coaching career and he was a 5-time Pro Bowler. He was a household name as a player when current recruits' dads were playing/watching.

I am in now way questioning you, but I always wonder where do you guys hear this stuff? Other boards? Internet? Inside information? Twitter? Or all of the above?

Just been following this stuff a long time. Met some valuable people along the way. Used to be a lot more connected, but sort of stopped caring to reach out for info for a while. Sometimes people I trust reach out with information that I can share here on the board. In no way am I an "insider". :thumb:

Just wondering why McGee would be interested in a seemingly lateral move. Oh wait he wants a room in the Lovie Shack!

I have a hard time buying college coordinators making a lateral move at this point in the year.
I can see it for enough $ and for the chance to coach under a well-respected NFL coach like Lovie. These are the kinds of doors a hire like him opens up for you.

As a coach or a recruiter? Mcgee did pretty well recruiting for Arkansas a few years ago.

Which do we want? How will the pieces all fit? I don't know how to answer these questions. Sherman was an NFL head coach and OC and the head coach of a major college program relatively recently where he had a lot of recruiting success in a key hotbed. That seems good. McGee is the current OC of a good Power 5 offense and program, the kind we're hoping to be. That also seems good.

Wouldn't 7 digits make anyone consider? :D

Need to do some research into his history as a coordinator, but he is a STUD recruiter.

Mixed track record. Lots of success at Arkansas, where he coached the Ryan Tannehill/Knile Davis teams.

His Louisville offenses have not been great the last couple years, and he was a disaster as HC at UAB.

Yeah, that's what I gathered in my brief look-over. Does anyone know if Petrino is actually calling the plays at Louisville?
