Illinois Golf 2023-24

We need an insider to report live from Atkins. With a cart and binoculars from the cart path.

By the way, the coach told me players "earn" spots; doesn't matter if you're a senior, fifth-year or a freshman.
I get the point but you can earn it over the course of the whole year. Buchanan and Herendeen aren’t going to have to qualify for regionals. The last three spots will be earned now I would think. No one has been able to lock it down so far.

In complete transparency, I am a high school golf coach and my program is lucky enough have currently 3 college golfers playing and 2 going D1 next year including one in the Big 10. I know for a fact, like players losing 36 hole qualifiers for conferences this year, that teams in college golf typical have an earn you way in component to their ladder. The team that one my players is on is a top 20 D3 program and this is what they do. Top 2 overall averages are in, if you get a top 10 the tourney before you are in, then the remaining are coaches choices that typically come down to a 2 day qualifier.

Small is in a unique situation because it is like 2 obvious choices and the rest of the entire team kinda has an argument to go. Form in practice is gonna be huge, I don't know Stanford's course at all but is par 70-6700 yards, for these guys that is short so I imagine shot making is at a premium. course rating and slope is 73.8 and 138. that is tough for sure, but not an absurd slope, so usually that indicates green complexes are not brutal, again this is with no knowledge of their course just talking how you would typically look a those numbers. If he is going to decide maybe a spot with just coaches choice and two qualify I am betting he goes with his best iron player and chooses Crawford as one. the other players battle it out. But I don't know the inner workings of the players game to be fully informed on that, I do know that Crawford is considered a strong iron player. Should be fun to follow, this is a tough bracket for sure.

It's now 5 p.m. No word on team and alternate (s?). Other schools have announced, but not Illinois. I don't understand; the regional starts tomorrow. The team is certainly in Palo Alto.

I'm sure the team will be announced soon after my post. That's the way things go with my timing. I hope so.

All I know now at 5:11 p.m. is regional coverage is on Golfstat.

Go Illini!

Interesting: News-Gazette story 5/11 said Coach and team checked out Stanford Golf Course last fall (during Pebble Beach/Cypress trip). I think rules say you can't play a course within a year of a regional or a national. At least they got to see the course. Smart, Coach Small, thinking your team just might possibly wind up there for the regional. Mike Small for President.

Starting this morning on hole #1, 8:30 Pacific
Paired up with Florida State and Ole Miss
They'll know very well where they stand with that pairing.
Short course for these guys. Need to bring your iron game

alright, showtime.

I've got no issues with that lineup, and at the start of the year that would've been close to the pick. In my mind Vois and Goeke and your floor raisers and Hunt is the ceiling guy. He has shown he can go low and he can go high. Hopefully if he goes high one round those two are steady and keep you afloat. Should be fun.

As a former newspaper reporter, I'm glad I scooped Dan and Jeremy. See post 380. (Kidding, of course).

While we wait for Stanford info, may I interject a a PSA?

I'm in my 20th year as coach of my local Special Olympics golf team. Practice starts today at 4 p.m. Can't wait.

Why? Great people and friends- and no NIL - not yet.

Please get involved with Special Olympics in your area.

Thanks.

Makes sense. Can Small replace one of the five with the alternate between rounds?

Yea this has always been the case. At the start of the year the players have to break 70 from each tee box starting from the greys to the whites to the blues to the oranges. Most have it done by like September.

A little shocked it’s Goecke not Crawford considering recent tournament results but I’m guessing Crawford just doesn’t play well in practice idk. Go Illini!

Great start! Might see some low scores this event. No idea how hard the course is but my god is it short. 5 par 3s 3 par 5s par 5s are 500 520 and 540 in yardage. Or 3s are 160/170/180/190/215. The yardage is only 6700-6800. That’s short. Atkins is 7500 ish from the tips. There’s multiple par 4s longer than the par 5s here at Atkins. Albeit Atkins is a par 71 this one is a par 70. But still wow

And Goecke looks to be hot & just tied for the lead - but still very early
Yep always trust Mike Small. I will say from my limited knowledge of the players Timmy is a more distance hitter up and down guy. And I think Tyler probably hits it the least furthest him and Jerry. But both of them are very consistent and solid guys at their distances so short course might benefit him a lot!

And suddenly the pundits appear. Fugitives of basketball and football threads? Par for the course, of course.
