Agree. I ignore everyone's CB except Jerry Meyer, so his earlier Tilmon to Mizzou pick + this = a raised eyebrow.

Am I wrong in remembering that Jerry Meyer admitted that he was wrong about Tilmon after he retweeted his initial commitment?

I don't think people are as upset about the fact that he has asked out of his NLI, but more so because he is doing so after retweeting his commitment on Monday. Would love Kiir and a fifth year transfer like Ahmed Hamdy (loved watching him play as a guy who can get you 5-7 pts and 5 reb a game off the bench).

If the guy wants to waste his talent with Cuonzo just so he can play with his buddies, good riddance. If he decides to go somewhere else, more power to him as long as it's not a Big Ten school. :tsk:

i thought smbd posted earlier that it was a done deal of Kiir to LSU

There was an article from an LSU beat writer that discussed the possibility of Kiir following Wade and somebody in Kiir's camp was quoted as saying they had "interest." Perhaps there was more than that article which I missed.

Also, does this mean Smith probably isn't coming to Champaign? I am sure we are not out of the conversation, but I would think that this hurts our chances.

I think Tilmon is just a little un$ure of what to do at this point.

Yes. Every recruitment that goes against the Illini clearly has to involve illicit money.

Grab Kiir and a fifth year big and start counting down the days until Braggin Rights tickets go on sale.

Not going to spin this or sugarcoat it. Tilmon doing this is going to set us back years. Similar situation to Cliff.

In hindsight, maybe we should have taken Cuonzo. We would all be thrilled with his incoming class. Say what you will about his coaching ability, but 90% of college hoops is recruiting. Cuonzo seems ready and willing to play in the grey area. Watch out when he lands Mark Smith...

Disagree. Was never too enthused about Martin as a coach. Losing JT does hurt, but I don't think it's that big of a setback.

I'm hopeful for Kirr and Smith and that will get us on the right track. Do I expect it? No.

I don't think it helps, but neither did Izzo getting so involved. Tilmon was trying to recruit Smith to Illinois, wonder if he will do the same with Miznoz.
Whatever, hiring Antiqua should give everyone hope on the recruiting front going forward, no matter who we get or don't get this year.

set us back years? I don't care if Cuonzo gets the top 5 rated players every year, I still wouldn't want him as the coach. He didn't do anything with the talent he had Cal and all of a sudden he will change into a better coach?

How do you think we got Tilmon's commitment in the first place? And why did he delay signing back in November? To think we (or any other power 5 school) dont operate in the grey area is foolish.

I would taken Underwood over Cuonzo every time. Sure Cuonzo is making a splash with some recruits, but for the most part coaching wins out. No question that Underwood is a better coach than Cuonzo.

I say compare where Illinois is in 3 years to where Mizzou is in 3 years. I'm 90% confident we will be in a better place.

No and no.

If the state of your program hangs so heavily on a single recruit that it will be "set back" multiple years, you have an awful program foundation. Its gonna hurt a lot to lose a guy who essentially would've played as much as physically possible, but in all honesty he's probably worth maybe 2 or 3 wins next year, and the pretty much the same in 2019. Please tell me you know how Cliff's KU career went. Tell me we lost that recruitment now with hindsight and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Cuonzo has had talent on a few teams. He's failed to parlay it into anything more than a S16 app. Once. In 9 years. Underwood has had minimal talent and has come within 10 pts of beating every NCAAT game his teams have played, not to mention having one of the best in season records ever for a 4th year head coach. This is an issue of wanting a big splash for a year, maybe two vs. building a program around a style of play that obviously works.

I'm not so sure Tilmon would have stayed if Groce was retained. He was a little flakey and unsure before he signed.

With Mizzou's roster filling out with a couple of burger boys (who are in his ear every day), an exESL player/new coach popping into his school 48 hrs earlier whispering advice, and a Stl. media frenzy encouraging it - I'm not so sure a weakened John Groce could have defended this. Could you imagine if this was happening now with Groce still here? Feels like Bruce Weber all over again.

+1

This is part of the risk of a coaching change, one that I'm all-in on, btw. The only part of this that gets me is the position part --we go from a true freshman expected to start, to having to play smoke-and-mirrors at center.

Not to re-legislate a long-standing tenet of message boardism, but do such recruits exist? Recruits that don't want to be here....go elsewhere.
