ties will be resolved
Ouch.. Auburn counts as a high major offer but we don't. :(

The author just cited a couple of offers. Who cares? Only thing that matters is Lewis' and his inner circle's opinions.

Lewis is tearing it up thus far.

I personally do not like AAU Basketball, but I will admit I don't even know how one would go about getting on a team like Mac Irvin Fire. My problem is I don't like shopping kids to specific universities and the wear and tear of the schedule. What happens to kids not chosen, what avenue do they have? Is the AAU just for the Elite kids?

Tons and tons of kids play AAU. It's just a function of the increasing specialization of sports. The high school season only takes up so much of the year, AAU fills in the rest instead of football, baseball, track, whatever.

For the kids not good enough to get a college scholarship, it's just more basketball which is a fun, good thing. The problem is programs that cost parents a ton promising unrealistic dreams of a college scholarship, that's where this stuff gets abusive, but elite programs like the Fire are mostly free to play due to shoe money sponsorships and such.

And what you wish could be the case, just as a fan of the sport of basketball, is for there to be a traveling circuit for the best high-school aged kids to play against one another with elite coaching in a skill development-focused environment. That is the way to make the best basketball players, not the playground hype video stuff that top level "showcase" AAU ball tends to be. But these AAU coaches did not create the perverse incentive structure present in the US basketball developmental pipeline. They are just doing their best for their players within that structure, which is what is most important.

The NBA and NCAA could work collaboratively with the shoe companies and major agencies to make an AAU infrastructure that developed better basketball players if they really wanted to. But there's no real incentive to do that when America already produces the best players in the world. In soccer, by contrast, those kinds of development pipelines are very carefully managed, because the arms race for a country's overall talent is so important for so many stakeholders.

Exactly. Kobe Bryant has talked about how bad AAU is for skill development. But there isn't enough incentive to make the change.

My boy played on a "mediocre" team for a couple of years so I know a little. IMO the kids that think they are the best around want to play AAU to test their mettle. Usually you have to be asked to try out, and usually the kids that make a team and actually compete at a regional level are the athletic freaks. Skills are important, but not as much as speed, vertical, height, and strength.

A lot of Crystal Ball activity lately. Including recent picks for Trent Frazier, Terrence Lewis, and Jordan Goodwin to Illinois!

Yeah we lead for Trent Frazier. Jordan Goodwin is so good I bet blue bloods get involved.

One school is at the top of 2017 Wellington (FL) CG Trent Frazier's list: http://www.hoopseen.com/node/2029

After an in-home visit last week, Illinois is at the top of 2017 Wellington (FL) combo guard Trent Frazier's list.
"The visit went a lot better than I expected it to. In fact, it put Illinois right at the top of my list," Frazier told HoopSeen.com.

Jericho Sims 2017 F with an Illinois offer. I don't know a single thing about him. Just noticed it on Twitter.

Easy pickin' for Self & Snacks - just goes after whoever the Illini are going after and get a commit.

It sure seems like that. A bad set up for us because a blue blood has two of our best past recruiters on their staff. Recruiting ties in our area. Sucks.

Damn blue bloods getting in the way of my dream team

The blue bloods were always going to be involved due to Tilmon's potential. I think we're in a lucky position with Tilmon being extremely raw which decreases the priority and pressure from those guys. Kansas already has a big and raw center coming in with Azubuike and he doesn't seem like a one and done player so Tilmon may have some competition for playing time. I would hope that big men are a bit hesitant to commit to Kansas if they're looking for immediate playing time. Still, the chances of landing him decrease the longer he takes with his decision.

Has anyone heard where the Illini staff will be during this recruiting period?

Stanford was in to see Justin Smith today

They really like his combination of academics and athletic ability. Add in that one of Justin's teammates just agreed to a preferred walk-on spot at Stanford and I bet they are an attractive option for him.

Well if he can combine the strengths of Trent Meacham and Chester Frazier, he'll be a whale of a player for us.

I heard that Illinois had an in-home with Justin Smith recently and for various reasons, it didn't seem to resonate with or excite Justin.

Glad to hear that other kids, like Trent Frazier apparently, positively respond to the staff.

Jericho Sims 2017 F with an Illinois offer. I don't know a single thing about him. Just noticed it on Twitter.

He's about 6'8" and pretty thin. Here's a link to an article talking about his character, which is positive, and one video also featuring Theo John. He's a lefty and seems like he can jump a little bit.
