Kentucky isn't as good as they usually are, and Labissere has been a huge disappointment. He is more highly ranked than guys playing ahead of him.

Yeah people are PISSED about Skal around here. Part of it is that Cal keeps trying to get him to be a back-to-the-basket guy and he just isn't one. He is more of a face up guy. Humphries is getting very little playing time. Was a big mistake for him to reclassify and go to UK. UK's frontcourt is pretty bad this year. Ulis/Murray/Briscoe are the only reason they are winning.

Is anybody else paying attention to the bigs at the blue bloods? Diallo and Bragg come off the bench at KU and generally get less than 10 minutes. Labissere at UK comes off the bench and if memory serves me well, generally gets about 10-15 min per game. Humphries, the 7ft Australian from La Lumiere generally doesn't even get in games and of course, UK just signed 2-3 highly rated bigs. Jeter at Duke doesn't play despite their incredibly short bench. I hope Tilmon understands he will get the nod from day one.

If anything, doesn't that reinforce the fact that our biggest selling point doesn't really factor in to a lot of these kids' decisions?

Wouldn't Paul, Thorne and Black covered us in this area. Maybe I am just cutting the guy too much slack - but our three bigs are out. Hard to predict that when recruiting last year.

Thorne was a stop gap, not part of a plan. The Paul situation puts us in a serious bind, but why should Groce get a pass on being so reliant on Paul (this second time around)?

Anyway we need a big.

Precisely.

If the kids' choices are any indication, top prospects don't care about PT. They care about track record in putting players in the NBA, dancing consistently, and whatever plethora of shady benefits that come with some (not all!) of the blue blood programs.

I agree with this.
Which begs the question for those ready for JG to be gone today (Maybe this belongs in the JG Thread). Since we aren't going to cheat/pay players, and we're not going to be able to hire a replacement with a proven track record of getting guys to the NBA, why not stick with this young charismatic coach for 2-3 more seasons to see what he can develop into?

Why do you say that? I don't know the Finke family personally, but I believe both parents were Illini. Live in Champaign and his dad coaches for Centennial. Brother starts as a RS Freshman and will likely start / get significant minutes for the next four year. Good chance to play on the 2018 team with his upperclassman brother.

I know people say that we have to get DaMonte Williams... but if we can't lock up this kid I think we've got some big issues on our hands.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I think his mom posted on Facebook a little while back asking people not to be too upset if he goes somewhere else. And I've heard he really likes tOSU.

It's the way things seem to work for us. Our local 5 stars want to get away, don't want the pressure of being the savior. But when we recruit out of state 5 stars, they want to stay close to home. :tsk:

As much as I like Illinois, I would look at Illinois and wonder how much playing time I would get if I were a wing. We're still a while away from knowing what the lineup would be like in 2018-19, but as of right now we're projected to be pretty deep at those positions, and there's no guarantee that he'll be as tall as his brother (e.g. Ben Hansbrough).

With that being said, he is still a must get. I don't think that would sit too well losing him to another school in the conference. I still hate that we missed on KBD even though he was from Bloomington.

I would bet Verge was never a serious target for the Illini. Seems like there are too many ?'s surrounding the young man. I hope he finds his path and succeeds, but so far it appears he is still trying find his way.

He's scared of wing talent so he's going to Ohio State? For all the hand wringing, how many times has Illinois' depth actually scared away any talent in the past 10 years?

The only current tOSU player on the wing that would still be there would be Mickey Mitchell. Everyone else would be gone by the time his class arrives. We have Jordan, JCL, DJW, Kipper Nichols, Pickett. Some of those guys will spend time at the 4 but they're all currently wing players.

Another consequence of our wings-only recruiting.
