You have to take chances on somewhat less heralded Illinois players. We produce top basketball talent. Like the equivalent of Florida and football players. Maybe even to a greater extent than that. Year in and year out players produce at a high level that people think would barely contribute.

It does need to be noted that football grants more scholarships which allows more time for development and a greater opportunity of to error.

Well this was pretty much the most depressing thing I've seen in awhile and I just watched Schindler's List for the first time last week.

I didn't find the article depressing at all. I thought is was spot on regarding the analysis of our current state of affairs. We can't hide from the facts and the article also points out the fact there is still hope. Interesting comparison to the early Hensen years. Groce has had a tough road to hoe and a lot of things not go his way but I believe he is still capable of turning this thing around. The 2017 recruiting class may just determine his fate at Illinois.

Wow, this has to be the deadest these forums have been in a long while - tough times to be an Illini basketball fan.

Awaiting game time with hopefully some good news like no more injuries, we have a line on a potential recruit, or something....... :coffee:

It's been moving in this direction for a little while. The "Insiders" Era of Illinois Loyalty kept the posts up for a while. Not a lot of recruiting news in addition to us having a very bad season leads to little interest.

Ehh.. it's just a bad time of the year for fans looking for recruiting news. Players are busy with the high school season and aren't thinking about any schools at this point.

Re: the article - "Television changed everything". LOL what is this, 1950?

I suppose I get what Henricksen was saying, but I feel like I was getting NCAA packages on TV almost 20 years ago, seeing hundreds of games from around the country and we were doing just fine. To make any comparison with DePaul about the timing of declining programs seems off-base, as well. Maybe comments taken out of context...

According to MOB and Henricksen on the latest No Shot Clock, Kezo Brown has just kind of "disappeared" lately. Medical issues early in the year but he's not even been on the bench for the last several games and they're not sure why beyond off the court roadblocks - maybe academics? MOB is supposed to look into it. Also, Henricksen says Purdue, Illinois and Missouri are probably the leaders for Goodwin at this point.

Well with the way purdue has been losing games their fans are starting to grumble and gather their pitchforks too, and Mizzou is in worse shape than us, so gotta like our chances in that race, lol

Has anyone watched Nojel play since his injury? He was my most wanted player in the 2017 class pre-injury. Good to see Groce still interested. Him and Damonte in the same backcourt could be deadly.

Eastern, Williams, Pickett, Goodwin, and Tilmon would be some sort of dream class

Sorry for the vague/cryptic post, but it's not academics from what I've heard. Some of the stuff I heard seems personal so I don't want to speculate too much.

I am thinking that, if we haven't done so already, we should try to get back in the Racko recruitment. He has had a great senior year and seems to have gotten over the immaturity issues that have plagued him in the past. With the way that Mav has improved this year, with Black coming back, with Finke likely putting on some weight and improving, and with DJ and Kipper possibly giving us some extra size and length, I am starting to believe that we don't need to recruit a fifth year big. Instead I would like to attract Racko with the possibility of having him redshirt and use that year to put on twenty five pounds of muscle.

A 2016 big would be best, if Rako has turned the corner then he would be a great addition. Still not sure we would/should redshirt him with only 3 bigs, but that is a secondary opportunity.

Don't think Rako has much interest in Illinois.

Say he does. Not sure he'd accept a redshirt. While he doesn't quite have a Tisdale physique, adding 25 pounds of muscle in a year seems like a pipedream.

IIRC the entire reason we didn't show the interest level expected (and made him upset) was the need to get an immediate impact guy. So yeah, doesn't seem like a real possibility.

Now that was before Mav started playing well, so maybe the thought process would change....

No one can 25 pounds of muscle in a year without some, ahem, "assistance". ;)

Do you think Froling was more immediate impact, my guess is they are about the same?

Just guessing, but I expect Rako was judged as a no win by the staff, low interest unless Illinois was his best offer by far. If he didn't improve attitude we didn't want him, if he did improve he wouldn't need us.

Still at this point, if he had genuine interest & you think his attitude is acceptable, he seems skill wise better than we should hope for on a 2016 big this late in the game. But regardless, I would be very surprised if we ended up with Rako at this point.

If Groce goes the 5th year transfer route for a big man again this off-season, he is all in on thinking he can land a quality big man in the 2017 class. I hope he's right, because if he fails to land an impact guy in the 2017 class, the post position depth on this team will be very scary looking.

Ideally Illinois would find a high school post player to fill a roster spot in the 2016 class to develop. After the 16-17 season, as of right now, they will only have Finke and Black.

Good to see another No Shot Clock listener. Anyone who's interested in Illini recruiting or Chicago area prep hoops should give that show a listen.

Was at Simeon vs TJL's Washington in Chicago and noticed that Kezo wasn't even on the bench. Wasn't too long ago that his dad was talking about Duke and Kentucky. Now he's having trouble getting on the court in HS. Whats the saying...? "Recruiting is fluid?"

I certainly wish the kid the best. I know he has a good relationship with the Simeon kids on this Illini team. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good.

I think Froling may be more physically ready to contribute? Not sure since I really don't know too much about him. I've seen some recent tweets that he's really doing well, though.

Harry Froling was named camp MVP at the NBAs Basketball Without Borders Camp during NBA All Star Weekend in Toronto. This camp included players like Deandre Ayton and Thon Maker.
