I would say he has better handling and finishing skills than Sergio! Does look like he will need to learn how to not push off at the next level. I really hope we see him in Orange and Blue!

Mr. Basketball typically goes to a Senior, unless a young kid is a future lottery pick. The three kids above Goodwin are all good players that had great senior seasons, so I can't fault the voters.

Front-runners for next season (IMO):

1. Jordan Goodwin
2. Nojel Eastern
3. Da'Monte Williams

What about Tilmon when he transfers to Althoff. [emoji2]

To get back to where Illinois belongs, we need to land Goodwin. Dude is special and will lead and lift everyone around him. He's a program changing recruit. Add any two bigs to that class and Illini hoops will be competing with the big boys again. Let's hope we can keep him in-state.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind taking a flier on this Chasten kid from Leroy. Kid has some upside. It's always nice to land a small town Illinois kid every once in awhile. Gives kids from small towns hope that they can play at that level.Maybe they work a little harder at hoops to create future recruits Most times it has worked out: Kaufman, Wheeler, Michael.. (I count Jacksonville as small town) If it doesn't work out, he probably transfers to an MVC school and his stole opens up. And I didn't even mention Brian Cardinal. Don't sleep on small town players.

Agree on Goodwin. Gotta have him.

WRT Chastain, the case for bringing on another wing is weak. If he was a big, sure. No problem w/sniffing around (scrimmage w/the team), but no offer unless he passes the audition. Small town stuff is feel good, no doubt, but should (will) not come into play in this decision.

I understand the love for Goodwin, but wouldn't put him close to a gotta have category...maybe very nice to get. To me a quality big is way more important with Williams and Pickett already verballed for 2017.

With Chastain, as you say the case for a wing is weak and with potentially no scholarships available I don't see why we would even consider it at this point...if/when a scholarship opens it is far more important to try to fill some holes/cover risks at 1,4,& 5. At the point we find out we lose 2 wings for next year, then maybe you start considering finding another wing.

You're right: very nice get. Tilmon is the must get.

Thing about Goodwin that's so appealing is his intangibles (leadership, will to win). We need that.

The intangibles is what makes Goodwin a must get. The determination to win, the toughness, the effort, getting other players fired up. He is the type of guy i feel like we have been missing. Goodwin makes everyone else on the court better.

Getting Goodwin certainly wouldn't hurt our chances with a certain 5 star big ;).

Agree with this take for the most part....but I see leadership as a critical need and I see Goodwin potential impact on the team in that area as huge..

They're both must get recruits. We need Tilmon due to his position and the good publicity from getting a 5 star, and we need Goodwin due to his attitude, toughness, and production.

Yes. Thing is, as much as I think it would be amazing if we landed Tilmon, I actually want Goodwin more. Just as much as Damonte. The guy is a pure winner. He's got the Rayvonte Rice skillset with a better team mindset. He would instantly make any team better, IMO. He is a bulldog, and he's got great leadership qualities. I feel like he's chronically underrated (as was Rayvonte) and would be ecstatic if he committed to the Illini.

Alright, we had the presser. Where are our Tilmon and Goodwin verbals?

Totally agree. Goodwin is a must get. He is simply a winner and a leader and someone that is going to make everyone around him better.

Can we just say he's really good and a winner?
Hmm... how can that be shortened more?

Regarding Chastain, I should have added that if a player like Nunn were to not be with the team at some point, Chastain would be a heck of a nice back-up plan and way to utilize that open scholarship. Not to mention it would help with class balance.. A 6'6' wing that can shoot and elevate is an intriguing prospect.. Can he defend the perimeter at this level? I don't know. But, the kid has potential, and would be worth the gamble if we lose Nunn which is possible.

If Nunn remains on the team the priority for the open scholarship is a post player.

We need to add a post player unless Thorne miraculously receives a 6h year. Whether a high school Big or 5th year transfer Big, we need to add a post player.

I'm not in the camp of Goodwin is a must get at this point, definitely not more important than Tilmon because of position need. But that's ok, no need to split hairs between nice to have: must have at this point.

Question back though: At this point would you hold a scholarship for Goodwin (assuming someone like Eastern/Tilmon/? wanted to commit)? Over sign for Goodwin? (Over signing with 6 potential scholarships likely might be a stretch, but maybe use all 6 & leave none on paper for 2018)
