IMHO, Pickett should re-classify and go the 5th year prep route, but here again he might have been the bait for the Tilmon/Goodwin deal.
New NCAA academic standards could throw a wrench into some of this.

I'm not following you on why Pickett would go 5th year prep? If you're still going to honor the scholarship in '18 you still have the same numbers problem, unless one of these additional targets is one and one. I would rather have him on campus and red shirt. I mean it might help his recruiting ranking but I don't see it helping his development.

Pickett also might be the reason we got the ball rolling on Tilmon and hopefully Goodwin.

We are not Indiana... no Creaning allowed at this point.

Absolutely, to both points. For the record, am not advocating creaning Pickett. To the contrary, kudos to the kid for taking the initial leap.

Why? Why not redshirt as a frosh? Worked for Happ at Wisky and countless others. Pickett is far better served being part of the team and in school rather than going to prep school for a year.

A shame, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Credit to Pickett for committing early.

Exactly....In the long run turning away a couple of in state recruits that want to come only makes us more appealing.

Eastern could commit today if he wanted to. I'll still be happy with having the best player in the state in his class (JGood) assuming he commits and the son of HRF (who could still very easily end up Top 100) and the guy who got the ball rolling (who's also no slouch) even if it means we don't land an Eastern or Smith, especially if we get Frazier and another good big to go along with what we have.

Redshirting is not the be all end all. Ryan idid it @ Wisconsin, but for every Happ there were at least one who didn't make it. How did the redshirt for Evan Anderson or J.P. Gowinski work out.? George Marshall and on.
Redshirting every player that is not B1G ready is not a long term solution to recruiting.

The kid can play. I've seen him several times. He was not bait. They wanted him. It is insulting to the kid to say he was taken to lure others. He was taken on his on merit.

man, we land a couple of recruits and all of a sudden our eyes get so big that we want a 3 star top 150 player to give up his scholarship so we could potentially have room for two kids that have little interest in our program.

Agree, very insulting! I also doubt Groce plays that game and I don't believe we are in the position to use another player just as bait, especially PG.

Two separate situations. We can still take Smith/Eastern vs. Frazier/Epperson right.? Which pair do you like.?? Redshirting Pickett as has been suggested on here does not free up a scholarship, but him going to 5th year prep school does free up a 2018, which could be used on Finke, Ayo, or Ramey.

Good grief. He was 1st team all state as a junior and averaged 23(?) ppg in the St. Louis metro area and still has another 10+ months before he arrives on campus.

Forget that they're from the same HS, Pickett reminds me a lot of Malcolm Hill at that same age. Neither player wows you from an athletic or physical standpoint, but they produce in a big way. And Hill really struggled as a freshman; that entire class did. (Amazingly, Jaylon Tate was the only guy that was able to contribute semi-consistently early on.) Pickett will need time to adjust to the college game, no doubt, but he and the team are in a good position where he can take some bumps, figure out where he stacks up to that level of competition, and work on his development without the added pressure of being relied upon to be a major contributor from day 1. He want's to be an Illini; there's no guarantee that opportunity would still be there after a year of prep school so he jumped on it at the first chance. (Good for him, good for us.)

So you want him to go to prep school for how many years? Or is he walking on in 2018?

If someone graduates from high school, they can no longer play a fifth year at a prep school. That changed some years ago.

You cannot ask a kid to not graduate from high school just so you can make him go to prep school. If I were him, I would then tell you to shove it and go somewhere where I was wanted.

Moot point, though. The coaches think more of him than you do.

I say turn down all the top 100 Chicago area talent we can afford to. That's a good problem to have.

Again, doesn't it only open up a 2018 scholarship if he doesn't come to Illinois in 2018? He would be reclassifying to 2018 and just taking the scholarship then, or am I missing something super obvious that I'm going to be embarrassed about shortly?

You appear to be right from where I'm sitting

I'd take Frazier/Epperson any day. Wings will come and go every year. But PG's and big men are much tougher to find.

Some of you are hardcore! Would you want your son or daughter made to go to a 5th year prep school when they didn't need to?

Are we seriously discussing scholarship problems when there are 6 scholarships available for this class. Not only that but only 3 scholarships are spoken for at this time. There are still 3 scholarships to give, I think that is more than enough for this class without insulting a fine young player who has committed to playing for the orange and blue. Pickett seams to be a kid who will make us proud that he is associated with this university. We should be doing everything we can to make him and his fellow recruits feel welcome in the Illini family.

Thanks Combes..Ive only seen videos and was happy when he committed. Didn't he average about 24-25 per game for a pretty good team in one of the toughest conferneces in the state? Sounds to me like he can fill it up pretty good. Maybe redshirt if his defense is poor but that's it.
