Hurley did this at Buffalo with Nate Oats...genius decision on his part then. There are incredible minds in HS coaching ranks and sometimes it may help you land a player
Who did Oats bring with him to Buffalo? Gotta say I'm extremely surprised it would happen at that level.

Hurley hired Oats, who was a HS coach he became familiar with when recruiting one of his players. Though I think he was recruiting the player to Rhode Island, and didn't hire Oats until later when he was at Buffalo.

EC Matthew's went to Rhode Island and Oats was his HS coach at Detroit Romulus

Thanks. I didn't know the full history but was always under the impression he hired Oats because he wanted Oats, it wasn't to reel in a player and take up a coaching position.

I get the impression that's still the case. He got the kid well before he gave Oats the job, it wasn't at the same time. I suppose it's possible Hurley promised to hire Oats when he got a head coaching gig in the future, to steer the recruit, but that seems like a stretch to me.

Main point is Hurley has had great success with finding at least one "diamond" assistant coach from HS ranks on recruiting trail. Thinking he's more apt than most to go back to that well if he finds a HS coach he likes. I dont see that as recruiting shenanigans if he gets introduced to a coach he really likes and has an opening.

I bet he really, really likes Boakye's coach. By far the most qualified candidate. :ROFLMAO:

I mean, a little different to hire a HS coach at a school like Buffalo vs a P5 school. Also would be a huge coincidence that the coach he liked so much all of a sudden also happens to coach the 5 star recruit he's getting involved with at the 11th hour.
