It's a different sport, but I've always considered that the closest comp to Lovie.

Pretty good comparison, the NBA name recognition and experience are obviously paying dividends for Alabama and their Football prominence creates more synergies for them than our basketball program for Lovie.

I thought that Anthony Grant would have done better at Alabama, but at the same time, it is not that Groce has done better at UI than Grant did at Alabama.

Which schools do you guys think are the biggest surprises in recruiting for 2017?

You do know that a lot of the schools getting 5 Stars players that were mentioned above have Sucked for a long time right ? So just Winning doesn't explain why their recruiting has gone through the roof when they now have Coaches with a past history of being known cheats.

Absolutely, I just meant in general. The more we win, the more attention and excitement there will be about the program. Thus making the tight recruiting battles easier to close.

Depends on what you mean surprises, but on a top national level Alabama, Washington and Auburn are the biggest winners so far.

For some reason, I feel better losing JT to Kansas instead of SLU if he decommits. Obviously, i'd prefer he not decommmit.

Why do you want the rich to get richer? I'd prefer he keep his (verbal) commitment to us or go to SLU.

Granted recruiting rankings don't mean everything, but if you go over to 247Sports and plug JT into SLU's recruiting class, their ranking is lower than Illinois' currently is.

Coupled with the fact that the rest of SLU's existing roster has much less talent than Illinois, I can't see them making any sort of national splash at any point that JT would be there.

By stringing together a few more classes in a row after 2017, they absolutely could down the road and Goodwin would be a major part of it - just don't see it happening in their first 2 years (look at TAMU last year).

I can't tell what you mean by this, but last year was the first year with their big recruiting class and they certainly made a national splash.

I just continue to not understand this thought of he's not going to win at SLU, but he would here. If they land him, they are going to be in a good spot next year, and a very good spot his sophomore year (he is not close to a one and done imo). I'm not saying they are final 4 good like some of the crazies on their message board are already proclaiming. But good enough that they should be easily in the tournament, and you know that come March, any team can make a run for a few games.

Of course he's going to win. The point is, will they be better than Illinois during the two years Tilmon is in college? If Tilmon went to Illinois, Illinois would be better than SLU would be with Tilmon during those two years.
This has NOTHING to do with winning.

Do we know if the staff is still in contact with Tillmon? Of if he's shut them down ala Goodwin.

He continues to talk to Groce and the assistants and tells them that he is still coming.

We shall see.

Hes gone time to move on...My guys just confirmed he has been talking with 2 other schools and SLU is one of the 2 not sure who 2nd school is....

I by no means consider any of this to be good news, but don't you think it is a bit strong to say that because he is talking to others, he is gone?

I believe winning will take care of recruiting. I believe this years team results will have a direct effect of the direction of the program. It all starts tonight. Good luck, and I am optimistic that we will have a good team this year.

Kansas has been bandied about.

Pickett is for sure still in Tilmon's ear, generally being supportive and continuing to plug for Illinois. This could be crucial.

Dude, don't hate on the Wilkes intel. He got that Twitter follow from Marni, or whatever. That's practically the same thing as a signed LOI!

This is not new. SLU has talked to him for weeks. Kansas is calling.

This is big boy recruiting. No reason to move on until it is over. So far, he is still telling the coaches he is coming and his mom wants him here. Will he end up elsewhere? Could happen. But no reason to bail now.

I don't think it has to do with winning. Or not very much. Nothing is a little strong, but I agree it's not the main player here. I was responding to the people saying they don't understand why he would go there because they're bad. Also not that it's that big of a deal, but I'd give SLU the slight edge adding Tilmon to each of the current projected rosters, if each team were to add no more than who is currently committed. And if you say Illinois is going to add more players, you have to allow that SLU is as well. Either way, it's close and would actually be a good game. But yes, there are more factors in play here.

Combes, if one takes JTs word at face value, any speculation what the hold up might be?
