Thank you for making this post! i am extremely board at work this morning and you gave me ample enough reason to go and read the entire THT commitment thread...

After he announced, i was so salty i couldn't even look at that thread or the recruiting thread for weeks! but enough time has passed, and there's just too much interesting stuff in that thread! So thank you!! :thumb:

Sorry for your disappointment, but I feel someone else is much more in recruitment issues. Mike the Relevator, has been invisible since THT commit, he was a big THT fan , and was not sure of his return. He was very in tune to all recruitment, and have missed his input. Hope he returns soon, but he was pretty upset when that happened. Disappointment was my feeling, but have decided sometimes you have to do things for the big picture, even if you know it's not a good feel.

Yeah where did he go??

What in the world does race have to do with this story? I could understand if a white coach cut every black kid on the team or vice versa, but cutting one is hardly a good basis for crying racism as some of these folks seem to be doing.

Nepotism is a more credible charge.

Having more than 20 years of coaching experience, I will speculate that this is about coachability, attitude, effort, and unselfishness more than race. 1000X more than race.

Can anyone tell me a good place to get Illini men's basketball recruiting info?

Yeah where did he go??

Believe his statement was unbelievable, and he had get away for awhile. Something to that effect. Mike's constant posts always gave you accurate information, being retired it gave him something to do, that he really enjoyed. Mike, come back , you are missed.

Check out the Tim Finke and Champaign Central HS basketball thread, I think some people post occasional recruiting news in there

Austin Colbert has started the first 2 games this year for Hampton University.
Oh, now that's interesting. I thought he had faded from the picture.

In the first game he had 6 points and 8 rebounds in 32 minutes (most minutes played on team). During the next game he had 1 point and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes.

=/

Didn’t Tim have some Ivy League offers? Surely a degree from out east would be 10 times more valuable than a for-profit school in PHX.

Wow. I didn’t realize GCU is a for profit school. Hard to justify that move unless it’s his only option.

The GCU basketball program is very good and a fast-riser. Majerle is a very good coach who knows a thing or two about the NBA. The game atmosphere at GCU is ridiculous, Phoenix is a beautiful, world-class city, and Tim Finke will be like the rest of us, he will get out of his education what he puts into it.

If all he wants to do is coach basketball like his dad, GCU will do just fine. If he enjoys living in Arizona, I'm sure coach Majerle will be able to make some calls for him.

I don't think he is good enough to play at Illinois, just like I don't think his brother is good enough to play on an Illinois team that will win a Big Ten championship. Michael Finke wouldn't sniff the court at Duke, Kansas, Carolina, Florida, Arizona or any of those schools the Illini are aspiring to be like.

The Tim Finke recruitment is a great case-study for why you don't accept commitments too early. TF was a borderline five-star, top 30 kid two years ago. Now he's going to Grand Canyon University.

These kids developed at different rates. Finke was an early bloomer who had size and athleticism as a 16 year old. Sometimes having those traits too early can actually be a detriment to your development because you rely on them instead of developing your skillset. As other kids caught up physically with Finke, he fell behind.

What happened to Finke isn't unique. Even without the bizarre off the court stuff, Kezo Brown was in a similar situation before committing to Chicago State. Ben Coupet a couple years ago was also similar, high ranking nationally as an underclassmen before falling away later as other kids caught up physically.

Well, I'm not so sure about all that. Kezo's off court issues prevented him from gaining attention on the court and prevented him from maxing out his potential. Kezo would have been fine but for that.
Coupet did fall off from his prior rankings but he still ended up at a major school at UNLV. He isn't playing...even in exhibition games apparently but he's there.
Finke had higher options than GCU even with his less than stellar summer performance and drops in the rankings. He's still a highly rated player in Illinois. I can only imagine his only reason for choosing GCU was that the highest major schools in his top 5 backed off, he found a higher calling at GCU and chose it. Honestly, unless you think the NBA is in your future, you should really just choose the school you like best. And if he likes GCU best, ok. Not for me but I wish him the best.

Finke was obviously a plan B/C for Illini and Vanderbilt. Illini signed Ayo and are looking for a shooter. Vanderbilt just got a verbal from Garland and lead for Langford.

Makes sense Finke would want to regroup and solicit some offers for a spring signing.

Not sure why he chose GCU, though. Can’t make sense of that one. He isn’t projecting towards a professional basketball career, and his degree may or may not be worth much depending on who’s reviewing his resume. I just don’t see how that decision is in his best interests. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe it’s just a “temporary” commitment to demonstrate his dad didn’t boot that player for his benefit?

Personally, I’ll be shocked if he ends up at GCU.

Not sure why he would choose this college?

You already pointed out he is not NBA bound, I never thought he could've been, even when ranked Top 30...that said...

If you cant go pro, align yourself with Colangelo and Marjele...pretty sure this may lead to ALOT of doors being opened if he wants them to be, meaning does right by everyone.

His degree will be attached to Colangelo's name period. That alone if he stays in the athletic/business end of a career will carry probably all the weight he will need to end up successful. Basketball other than coaching will not be it.:chief:

Finke would have to sit entire year if he transferred to a private without changing residence. If he moved, he would have to sit out at private or public until 2nd semester.
I don’t believe that Coach Finke would have ever cut a player to benefit his son. He had to have solid reasoning on why the player should not make the team. I know of no coach that would do that without good reason. Most likely there are other issues that he cannot divulge. I am sure the AD is aware of these reasons and supports him otherwise it would never have gotten to the school board level.
To encourage students to skip school in protest has to be the most asinine thing I have seen from a protest. What will this accomplish? Whatever adults that are supporting this protest should be embarassed. To do anything that interferes with a students education and their chance at a better life is criminal!

Clearly you were not a fan of 90210.

I’m not sure what sort of bias you have towards Michael, but the overwhelming majority of our players wouldn’t see playing time at those schools.

Not really impressed by the few videos and Maurice Calloo's stat lines at Oak Hill. 7.8 pts/game, 4.2/reb game, 0/blocks.

Flo Thamba seems like a much more intriguing prospect

Sign Me Up

This seems interesting, something to watch over the season. NC baller, and big.;):illinois:

Watching him block two shots and then jump out to play D on the guard ... all in one play?! Let's get him in the O & B!

But the Ivies can't turn him into Thunder Dan Part Deux!

It's his decision, but were I a badger fan, the way he announced that would piss me off. It's not like Wiscy hasn't sent guys to the pros recently (4), or has been irrelevant nationally. I get that the Kentucky mystique is off the charts, the way they take top-10 players and routinely get them to the NBA, but that reads like Kentucky PR release.
