The problem with this line of thinking is that it is contradictory to his actions. If he really cares about backlash, why create more pressure on himself by taking additional unofficial visits to UI or sending your whole family to HH. That will create more expectations and backlash, no matter whether he chooses UCLA or UI. If he does not care about backlash, why not choose the school he really likes then (UI in your example)?

Eh... I don't think it really matters much. There would be major backlash either way. I really do not think the past week or so has changed that much. He is a stud Indiana HS bball player that IU wants. The fanbase expects him to go there no matter what. Going to a rival right across state lines would be basically sacrilege to most of the IU faithful in that situation no matter what he does or doesn't do.

I think you are thinking way too far into all of the decisions he is making. He is a 17 year old kid dealing with probably the first really important decision of his life. A lot of clear, rational thinking goes out the window.

Generally, yes. But WRT Wilkes (or any individual), we have no clue. All we know is that Wilkes' recruiting decision seems very measured. Don't see this being a knee jerk, impulse decision. At all.

I agree that the final decision will be very well thought out and rational, but hyper-analyzing every minor decision and action before then is just asinine, in my opinion. The unofficial to IU could have been nothing more than his friend asking if he wanted to come at the last minute, and Kris saying, "Sure. I've got nothing else going on."

Tim Finke has fallen off the radar a bit, but I think he would make an excellent addition in 2018. Quick shooter with range, does not need a lot of space to get his shot off, reminds me a little bit of Trevor Cooney of Syracuse.

I think Groce is in a really tough spot with respect to Tim Finke. Obviously he is a major talent and a legacy to boot, but with the limited scholarships (likely between 0-2) available for 2018 and the big fish we are in on at the moment (Ramey, Ayo, Gordon), it would be really difficult to accept a commitment if that were indeed Tim's intentions in the near future.

All I can say is, it is not a situation I would want to be put in.

All depends on what happens with Wilkes, if we miss on him then Finke becomes a real possibility.

I have not seen anything that indicates that Finke is ready to pull the trigger, but if he were, I think we'd accept him with open arms and deal with scholarships later. Now, if we secure other commitments first, that may change in the future.

I like Tim Finke. I think he could develop into even a better player than projected.

Maybe the kid is torn. Clearly, loves IU, loves IU hoops. Doesn't love Clappy. Tick tock...

What do his friends/neighbors want? 1) IU, 2) UCLA, 3) Anyone but Illinois

Who do his parents like? 1) Illinois (everyone loves Groce), 2) Alford, 3) Clappy is annoying.

Who does HE like? 1, 1A) Groce and Alford (I'm guessing), 9) Clappy.

Where will he get the best chances on the court? 1, 1A) Indiana and Illinois both have solid players around him, yet give him a chance to shine. 2) UCLA has a great team brewing, but he won't be the #1 option.

What will be most livable (convenient, comfortable)? 1) IU is right there, 2) Illinois is an easy drive to games for his parents and home for him, 3) UCLA is way the hell out there, but nice once you're there.

If his choice is "selfish", I think Illinois has a great chance: A coach and team that "feels like family", an up-and-coming roster which should win a lot of games and yet can feature him as a star, a school that will be familiar and comfortable to him and which is close enough for his friends and family to visit and see games, but far enough away to feel some independence...

There's plenty of reasons for Illinois to be the choice.
