Piper just posted an article on Scout, very positive quotes from Wilkes and his dad. Once again, seems like the staff has done all they can here, but will be tough to beat out the favorites.
I read it and came away feeling like it's another case where Groce has built a terrific relationship, but the recruit/family prefers what other programs are selling. If it was, "play for the coach you like best as a human being," Groce would win a lot of these battles.
Unfortunately, I think that Wilkes is leaning toward home state loyalty and/or a high-profile program that he believes will maximize NBA exposure. I think he's legitimately interested in Illinois (not just a courtesy visit), but it's another bridesmaid situation. I commend Groce and staff for making an incredible effort to stay in this one.
**Note: everything in the article was very positive - just not the "Illinois is the favorite as of now, but I'm going to sleep on it before announcing" kind of Trent Frazier-esque positivity. This is all my subjective impression - I could easily see someone else reading it, reading other recent articles, scanning Wilkes' twitter, and feeling good about our chances. I just...don't. I was way more hopeful before the visit.**
Assuming normal attrition, I'm hoping for something (semi-realistically) like:
2017
Tilmon
Epperson
Da'Monte Williams
Pickett
Frazier
5th year Wing or Big - hopefully a Sam McLauren/Jon Ekey-level contributor
2018
Courtney Ramey or Ayo Dosunmu
Carte'Are Gordon (ideally) or Tim Finke
2019
Francis Okoro
Markese Jacobs
EJ Liddell
*Scoring wing
*Big
If that plays out, Tilmon sticks around for two years, and most of our guys develop decently, we should be back in the top half of the B1G and in the tourney annually with that kind of roster. To reiterate something I alluded to in another post recently, that kind of recruiting (top 20-ish classes, at least one top-50 player per class, occasional McDAA-caliber players) is the minimum we need to compete with MSU, UW, Maryland, Michigan, and IU. If we don't do that, we'll be fighting for scraps with Iowa, PSU, Purdue, Northwestern, and Minnesota. Our current class, even if we add Epperson or Kiir, is average for the top 5 in the league.
