Any word on Wilkes canceling his remaining 4 OV's??
I'm not getting the allure of VCU now that Shaka is gone.... scratching my head...
He is waiting on the grey van Izzo is driving to deliver his Monopoly money!
Their new coach is what Memphis wished Josh Pastner had been. Young guy, lots of energy and actually can coach to boot.

Yeah just to add, he was a Shaka assistant. I've seen him do the havoc defense at a coaching clinic. He was the head coach at Chattanooga before he went back to VCU. VCU's identity still lies in the havoc defense, and he can do it.
Maybe that's why they have a pretty good basketball culture up. The players don't go to East Lansing for the scenery, beaches, great weather, etc. The players are going there to play for a HOF coach, great tradition, and great atmosphere for both revenue sports on campus.
Interesting. I didn't realize VCU was gunning for 2 other bigs-- I have no idea how much mutual interest exists for Mobley & Simms, or if it'll even affect Kiir's decision, but the twittersphere(I know, not the best source) really made it seem like Kiir was the top priority...here's to hoping either Mobley or Simms pulls the trigger first and makes Kiir's decision a little easier :thumb:
Havoc is a gimmick D imo. Not a fan and it's easily exploited by two good guards.
I found it even more interesting they referred to VCU as a high major.
I will call BS on this comment. Izzo has lost plenty of recruits because he would not play in that grey area and still coninues to stay clean. Why? Because the guy can flat out coach. Period!
The man constantly wins and has put several kids in the NBA, wins championships. If you are a player and lucky to be recruited by him why would you not go there vs any other no blue blood school?
Gimmicked all the way to the final four. Easy to say it's broken by two good guards, not a lot of teams have two good ball handling guards who play together. You might think that high d1 basketball players have the skills, but it's not always true. At the Texas coaches clinic in May, Bob Huggins, while not running the Havoc style, made a point to repeat that the base of their press was to force anybody with the ball to pass or dribble with their left hand. Winning games and forcing the most turnovers in D1 a high major conference forcing high D1 players left. Of course you gotta have the athletes to do any type of press, but when you do, it's really hard to deal with.
High major conference? Living in the middle of it I guess we'll have to disagree on that one. Yes, he made a good run to the F4 one time - but so have some other smaller teams, and he also crashed and burned early as well with that D. I refer to it as a gimmick in that few teams run it - so the opposing teams are not used to handling it - in a similar manner as the SU Zone D. SU's effectiveness started to wane when they joined the ACC and more and more coaches became familiar with how to attack it. Its still very formidable - and a big advantage against teams not used to playing against it.
The high major conference part was referring to Bob Huggins in the B12. My next post referring the VCU as a potential high major is obviously subjective, but while Shaka Smart was there they pretty much Gonzaga'd their way up from mid major. And I'm gonna keep disagreeing with you on gimmick. Few teams do it because few teams have the athletes. When you have the athletes it's a highly accepted basketball strategy. Where I come from, using tactics your opponents can't handle, whether it's pressing or the Syracuse 2-3 or anything else, that's called good coaching.

Stansbury has some really green grass when it comes to recruiting. Might as well stay away from recruits he is going after.
It's not a gimmick and is not easily exploited. Any guard, I don't care who you are or how good you are, does not like to face pressure the entirety of the court. It's called a strategy. Ask Oklahoma and their 3 good ballhandlers how easy it was to play VCU in the tourney last year. Louisville and their pressure are in Sweet Sixteens year after year. It sure as hell worked for Mike Anderson at Mizzou. Shoot, if we could employ it with our plethora of wing players, I'd be all for it.
