Recruits don't play for Jamal Walker.

It's no ill will toward Walker. We are in dire need of a re-calibration of the recruiting process, that is going to require an open chair, and that's the chair that costs us the least to open.

I shouldn't say "dire need of recalibration" until signing day. We need improvements, leave it at that for now. Walker is dead weight.

If it's 50-50, I think we have a 10% chance.

Guessing we have a 50%-50% chance of getting him, but there's only a 10% chance of that...

Illogical sarcasm. Don't try and explain. I like it. Same concept of synergy. Can't explain it in a formula. Probably a future writer for SNL.

Walker may not be a great recruiter but let's not pretend here that our recruiting failures and inability to close on multiple recruits is the sole result of Walker's inability. An open chair will hardly change much, especially given that the other chairs are occupied with assistants with national reputation (i.e., Orlando).

They've been recruiting like they agree with your overarching viewpoint on college basketball, they need to change and agree with me ;)

As I've said many times, recruiting is not about some magic ability to beat other coaches by outsmarting them on "recruiting strategy." Recruiting is about the ability to close on talent. If that fails, then people will quickly shift to another magic ability, the ability to consistently outsystem and outdevelop other top coaches and programs. When that fails, you are back to square one. Rinse, repeat.

The guys we lost this year, in our back yard are Walker guys

My first comment on this board yesterday was about giving Underwood and his staff time to prove they can win. I still firmly believe that until we show we can develop talent and win, the Top 50’s may be intrigued but reluctant to commit.

With that being said, there has to be accountability with the assistants that they produce out on the recruiting trail. These fellas are being highly compensated to do two things. Recruit and develop. Can’t be good at one and suck at the other anymore.

I am new to who has been the lead on which recruit, but if Walker was the guy for most of these “local” kids then his position needs to be evaluated based on his history of successfully gaining commitments. There is no consolation prize in recruiting.

Jitobah is a very big lumbersome #5....don't want him in this system at all, waste of a scholarship imo, Payton was ranked higher now is not, should tell us all we need to know, and Walker would be the best get out of the three which is worrisome to say the least.
Jitobah is a bit intriguing although he is, as you say, a very big lumbersome #5. He's definitely not Plan A. However, with some help from Fletch, he might be a nice piece. The school he's attending, Hamilton Heights, also appears to be one we should stay connected to.

My favorite thing about being an Illini fan is seeing the new names pop up when they are around Freshman-Sophomores and getting all the rumors that they are Illini locks only to see them slowly peel away. I think my favorite more recent ones was locking up Rose and Gordon, or maybe Parker and Okafor.

If there were a bronze or silver medal awarded for recruiting, Illini have to be the best in the country. It isn't even close either.

Oh well, we have winners this season...that should beat talent. belch.

Since we missed on EJ, maybe we can get a bench player on a state championship team late in the game.

Sorry, ole ward is grumpy today. Momma isn't feeling well and her chores went to me. So that makes my 80 year old bones ache...

The good news is there will be a new batch of hopefuls popping up soon. Maybe walker can get to know some 4th graders and get in earlier...maybe that's the problem?

You are a big part of this problem, I hope you realize that

Some of this has been said, but BU inherited a struggling program that lost its prominence due to a variety of reasons that we all know and are only relevant to show the state of the program and how to benchmark success over given time intervals. I like the fact that he has he has the confidence to go after top recruits, regardless of the state in which they reside. He has a prototypical player mold in mind, and it very much reminds me of the freakishly athletic Cincinnati teams under Huggins or previous Baylor, Texas, and Kansas team; it is a definite departure from tradition B1G who, while athletic and can run, are well-suited for the B1G's half court, hard style of play. However, with a change in offensive philosophy comes a change in the type of body/ player that you recruit. I very much see two (2 1/2, maybe) types of players that BU recruits: the long, athletic CG who can play 1-4 given the lineup he wants to run; and the second is the versatile, tall stretch 4 who can play down on the block and the wing with the complementary stroke from midrange or from three (i.e., Drew Timme). The "1/2" category is very much an extension of the first, but if not for size would fall into that bucket; by that I mean a long, banging big who is freakishly athletic, plays well above the rim, and can situate himself in a fast paced offense with the only differences between the second bucket would be range, bulk, and a true 5 who plays like a traditional 4. So looking at that, there are going to be a lot of targets who, concurrent with the start of our recruitment of said targets or emerge later in the process, are going to have many suitors, many of them being established, solid programs; this is something with which we are going to face for a while as this rebuilds its prominence and reputation (if anything [or to start], being exceptionally hard to beat at home) as the new identity of Illinois Basketball takes form.

So with that said, we are not going to land every recruit that we target; that is unrealistic even for the Blue Bloods. That notwithstanding, from what I have seen thus far with BU stepping into a situation that was dire, I have hope. And yeah, we are unlikely to land to EJ.

EJ to Illinois, Brea to Illinois, Oscar to Illinois after Kentucky offers everyone else...TSJ parents fight it out and he ends up here also in the end
