It's no ill will toward Walker. We are in dire need of a re-calibration of the recruiting process, that is going to require an open chair, and that's the chair that costs us the least to open.

I shouldn't say "dire need of recalibration" until signing day. We need improvements, leave it at that for now. Walker is dead weight.
Is Open Chair the same dude as Empty Chair - guy who replaced Matic? If so he must've graduated early to be up for a coaching position.

damn oh well. Just a shame that so many of these studs from the state go other places smh .

I know I reference MSU a lot in my posts, but I do live here and most of my wife’s family bleed green, here is a good idea as to why the 2 big state schools are very successful.

2018
MSU - 1st, 3rd, 4th & 7th rated recruits
U OF M - 2nd & 5th

2017
MSU - 1st
U OF M - 2nd
* Fell to 3 stars after that, probably no offer

2016
MSU - 2nd (Just missed Josh Jackson who went Blue Blood
U OF M - 3rd

2015
MSU - 1st

I could keep going, but my guess is the trend would continue. Bottom line, when you have high level state talent, you HAVE to consistently lock it up and recruit regionally and nationally to fill classes when your state is not deep.

ITS A REAL PROBLEM with Illinois not being able to lock down their state, far too much talent going outside the state.

I love the next man up, onto the next one Pollyanna mentality, but that’s not fully acknowledging that is not a successful way to be a top level program. There is undoubtedly an issue here that has many factors at hand. The brand just isn’t recognized well enough.

I expect that there is a back-up plan that would be a good replacement.

You play better than your talent and progress over serval seasons
IMO, that's tantamount to having considerably good luck. Maybe they can do this; maybe this year could be the start.

By all accounts Walker had a strong relationship with EJ. That being said if we don’t start winning it doesn’t matter all that much. Some kids are willing to take the gamble and win at some point and other kids want to go somewhere where there’s almost a guarantee to win. These kids watch the NBA and see guys go to teams that are set up to win right a way. Hopefully we can get a commit from an impact big man in this class. We are close to being in the top half of the Big Ten.

No. No, we are not. The pre-season rankings all have us at 13th or 14th.

We are making strides, but still a long way to go to be in the upper half of the conference.

It’s never going to be like it once was. No school “locks down” their state anymore. It’s a global world. These kids travel all the time with tournaments and events. They have internet and everything is a swipe or click away for info and communication. The idea of going out of state for school isn’t such a big deal now as it was in the 80s or whenever. It’s a smaller world. The idea of going somewhere not so close to home is intriguing and less limiting and easier these days. Illinois will never lock down illinois. The hope is to get more from here than we have been and pluck a few of our own from elsewhere. Idk- no good answer. But waiting and scrounging for last minute recruits is getting old fast.

Just as a fun little taste of the future, this time next year we will be wringing our hands over our next "need to get this guy that grew up in our back yard" target, Adam Miller (probably).

People should get used to the idea of that not happening too.

Disagree, I think we are. Not this year, but you add a impact big to next years team and we are in the top half.

We are definitely a perpetual side chick. In order to become a main chick/wifey, we have to lose some weight, maybe get some plastic surgery, or find another way to enhance our marketplace value in order to attract eligible suitors for more than just one night (or in our case, a two-night official visit).

The team's recent performance and the recruiting skill of the staff are definitely issues here, but the first place I'm looking to place blame right now is on Mike Thomas. The half-ssa job he did on the SFC (which is now only 10 years behind other elite facilities instead of 20) and failure to keep up with the Joneses on secondary facilities is killing us. It's not a coincidence that our most recent big recruiting losses came at the hands of Oregon, Kentucky, and OSU.

Improving what we can improve now will help, but I'm not sure I see anything other than a steady march of classes in the #20-30 range as our best case scenario until we catch up. You can get back to the dance with that, but it's going to take some work.

We need about $300MM of plastic surgery to make things right. To use a different analogy, these kids are looking to buy an iPhone X and we're selling a bag full of old Motorola Razr flip phones.

See my post, MSU consistently locks the top talent down. Add in U of M and throw the keys away; it can be done.

That's a tall order for ANY true freshman.

The impact big we're most likely to add to the 2019-20 team is either a transfer or a big leap forward by Samba Kane, or perhaps Higgs or Giorgi.

We really need a leap forward by someone this year.

Someone noted that we really squandered our chance at some of the best talent to come through downstate in a generation. tilmon, Okoro, Tatum, Bates-diop. long and deep recent list.

When Sergio decided to come play for Kruger, our brand was not nearly where it is now. If it had been, I'm not sure that the three Peoria guys end up here and we may never have seen those years from 99-06.

I was sold on BU being a great coach. I think that notion took a significant hit last year. That said, if that was an aberration, and we can do significantly better than the the predicted 13th place, then we can turn this around. Without a tourney appearance, does anyone think we'll get Miller? A guess a better way of putting it is how many wins do we need to play in the Miller Sweepstakes?
