And how can a program start winning without getting good recruits? See, we're in that loop. Still.
Is Open Chair the same dude as Empty Chair - guy who replaced Matic? If so he must've graduated early to be up for a coaching position. It's no ill will toward Walker. We are in dire need of a re-calibration of the recruiting process, that is going to require an open chair, and that's the chair that costs us the least to open.
I shouldn't say "dire need of recalibration" until signing day. We need improvements, leave it at that for now. Walker is dead weight.
damn oh well. Just a shame that so many of these studs from the state go other places smh .
IMO, that's tantamount to having considerably good luck. Maybe they can do this; maybe this year could be the start. You play better than your talent and progress over serval seasons
By all accounts Walker had a strong relationship with EJ. That being said if we don’t start winning it doesn’t matter all that much. Some kids are willing to take the gamble and win at some point and other kids want to go somewhere where there’s almost a guarantee to win. These kids watch the NBA and see guys go to teams that are set up to win right a way. Hopefully we can get a commit from an impact big man in this class. We are close to being in the top half of the Big Ten.

Maybe Groce wants to come back as an assistant to take Walkers place?
Just as a fun little taste of the future, this time next year we will be wringing our hands over our next "need to get this guy that grew up in our back yard" target, Adam Miller (probably).
So have we all given up on Shannon at this point too?
Disagree, I think we are. Not this year, but you add a impact big to next years team and we are in the top half.No. No, we are not. The pre-season rankings all have us at 13th or 14th.
We are making strides, but still a long way to go to be in the upper half of the conference.

The team's recent performance and the recruiting skill of the staff are definitely issues here, but the first place I'm looking to place blame right now is on Mike Thomas. The half-ssa job he did on the SFC (which is now only 10 years behind other elite facilities instead of 20) and failure to keep up with the Joneses on secondary facilities is killing us. It's not a coincidence that our most recent big recruiting losses came at the hands of Oregon, Kentucky, and OSU.We are definitely a perpetual side chick. In order to become a main chick/wifey, we have to lose some weight, maybe get some plastic surgery, or find another way to enhance our marketplace value in order to attract eligible suitors for more than just one night (or in our case, a two-night official visit).
It’s never going to be like it once was. No school “locks down” their state anymore. It’s a global world. These kids travel all the time with tournaments and events. They have internet and everything is a swipe or click away for info and communication. The idea of going out of state for school isn’t such a big deal now as it was in the 80s or whenever. It’s a smaller world. The idea of going somewhere not so close to home is intriguing and less limiting and easier these days. Illinois will never lock down illinois. The hope is to get more from here than we have been and pluck a few of our own from elsewhere. Idk- no good answer. But waiting and scrounging for last minute recruits is getting old fast.
That's a tall order for ANY true freshman.
The impact big we're most likely to add to the 2019-20 team is either a transfer or a big leap forward by Samba Kane, or perhaps Higgs or Giorgi.
Yeah! Let's get Cockburn!!
