historically big men take longer to develop than others.
many was the time that we illini wished we had redshirted a big when they developed for their last year of playing

This is an important "take".

It means we're currently at capacity -- with Ayo, Miller, DaMonte and Trent's 20-21 scholarships being now used by the three Freshmen and Plummer. And with many dominoes yet to fall. Monte is a freebie. Come on back DMFW!!

The remaining question involves how many carryover bigs have a chair when the music stops. Kofi, Lieb, and/or Hamlin. May still be.1 or even 2 slots left to fill.

Not sure how to link using my phone, but this appeared in San Diego Union Tribune article about San Diego St basketball:

An NCAA spokesperson told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday night that “the additional eligibility is only at the current school” but clarified that Thursday morning.

“The eligibility is available at another school,” the spokesperson said in a subsequent email, “but the scholarship will count against team limits. If a student-athlete stays at their current school but has exhausted eligibility, their aid doesn’t count against team limits.”

In other words, if you have 13 basketball players on scholarship and three seniors stay for their extra year, you still get three additional scholarships for 2021-22. If a senior transfers to another school for that extra season, he or she counts against the allotted scholarship limit (which is 13 for men’s basketball).

I think he means we beat the Bluebloods in identifying him and getting his commitment, and that he is appearing to be Blueblood worthy.

Having seen very little of BBV, I must add that I like...or at least am intrigued by.... his potential. It all depends on his willingness to be physical inside, his development into a consistent shooter, and increasing his speed and agility to become a strong defender. His instincts seems good, but a lot of hard work ahead. It all depends on patience and loving the work. Few 20 year-olds have the cognizance or desire to embrace patience and hard work beyond their understanding.

But the fact that he is still around is a good thing....for him and the team.

He was a major presence in Italy his first year, before getting injured. Iirc he scored 32 in one game and had a ton of confidence. I’m always hopeful he can work his way back to some important spot minutes and become an asset. If nothing else, he has to be beneficial in practice.

This is why I would rather Monte leave. Definitely a solid glue guy but I want Hawk to get more time and see what the FR’s can do.

It says a lot that he saw some meaningful (as in outcome was in question) minutes in the BTT backing up Kofi. I hope he sticks around whether or not Kofi comes back. We could do worse for a backup 4/5 and he still has a lot of eligibility left.

I find Frazier/Plummer redundant players. You really only need 1 guy like that, we got 2. So I think my attitude on the situation has alot to do with if Kofi comes back. If Kofi comes back, then yes it'd be great to have Frazier/Plummer/Damonte all back, veterans, and just go at it again for 1 year. BUT, if Kofi doesn't come back, then I'd rather start the rebuild next season and get our young guys minutes, than spend time playing these 1 year guys like TF/Plummer/Damonte.

I'd rather prepare for the future, than do whatever we can in the present just to make the NCAA tourney. Like, as a fan, if you asked me whether I'd want to play Goode/Podz or Frazier next year, I'd pick Goode/Podz if I knew Kofi wasn't coming back. I figure Kofi is the difference between if we are a true top 10 level team, or if we are a bubble team. So if were a bubble team, I'd rather play the young guys.
