I think insiders could boost their credibility by using less definitive language. Saying "hearing Garcia to Illinois" or "there will be fireworks next week" are easy gaffes that can be hedged against by making less of a "promise".

What I will say is that it's all in good fun and we all know *deep down* that we aren't here for the quality of information, rather the quantity of it.
Honestly, it’s on you all for thinking that it’s a done deal and getting so emotionally involved with any one recruit. You know the drill. It’s not done until the papers are signed. Nobody owes you anything to protect your feelings. It’s business and we need to accept that. I hope the people complaining about this never go into sales. You will be sorely disappointed in life if you do.

All I was told was the next two days but could be today. What me Indy or other insiders provide is what we hear and I realize it always doesn’t come true. Recruiting is crazy and these kids are in high school (some in college). A lot of people forget how an 18-20 year old can change their minds quickly, and now it’s even crazier with the nil situation. I will not always be right but the information is legitimate. I appreciate everyone on here who listens to me Indy TC and others, we do our best to give you guys solid information. This offseason has been tough but Brad is a great coach and I can tell you guys some of our upcoming classes of hs kids are going to be really good. Fingers crossed on the Kofi situation, I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated
Please continue doing what you do.....You must do it b/c you want to , and I respect that.....it's an Illini family attitude that again, I respect....

There are always part's of any crowd that wants to be different, so just ignore them and keep those of us that want your news fully informed on what you think is pertinent to us and our love of the beloved.......

thanks again......................................

I really don't understand people's suggestion that somehow NC or any of these other schools iis operating in some gray area.

If I want to pay Garcia 100K to spend 5 minutes on a zoom call to perk up my staff, I can do that. It's not illegal. That other schools have more businesses and alumni willing to play that game is not an indictment of them, it's an indictment of us and our alumni base.

(Or contrarily, it's laudable that our alumni doing productive $h!t instead of dropping money on athletes.)

Wait, are you saying I should not obsessively check the board for positive recruiting rumors, latch onto whatever comes up, and then have an epic personal meltdown when things don't turn out like I was hoping? I might have to reevaluate things.

That's a better play for us in the long run, if true. A program that habitually over-promises will get a reputation.
Disagree. Happens in consulting all the time. If promises aren't achieved, then it's always because of the client for any number of reasons that are very easy to say were the cause. This situation is so new and unknown any school could easily get out of making any sort of ridiculous claims without worry. That also means there's carte blanche to be bold, aggressive, and make as optimistic pitch as possible. Which is what we should be doing, but sounds like we're not and others are.

I would love to see BU land another big. Kofi would be awesome. Garcia would have been awesome. There are still others that will be in play…..
Regardless…seriously people…..
UNC is a great program. Tremendous history. One of the bluest of the blue bloods. Why do so many panic and think it’s the end of the world losing Garcia. I would be most of the posters on this board didn’t even watch an single Marquette game last season.
We have three incoming **** freshman, with Hutch now healthy, and the added bonus of TF and DW returning. CH looks bigger and stronger and has a 7’ wing span as a 6 10/11 sophomore ready to make the jump. Skills galore. We added Payne. AC may well be the best point guard in the country. Still have Grandy that was very solid in the second half of last year. We already have an under rated **** on the board for the class of 22/23. The coaching staff with a TBNamed #3 looks to be super solid.
The program is not in shambles. It’s not the worst off season ever.
It’s been an uncertain and chaotic off season, but one that has actually strengthened the long term position of the program.
NIL will get sorted out and Illinois will be solid there as well.
For goodness sake people…..relax…..the program is stronger than it’s been in a long time.

so what happens when he gets there and it ends up being nowhere close to $1M?
This. Illinois is using Opendorse. Everything is above board and fully disclosed with realistic numbers. That should be a solid long term strategy.

...not to mention that each upcoming high-level recruit believes that he's going to be the next NBA superstar, and it's easy - natural, even - for him to think that just because things didn't work out for some dud at the end of his college career, there's no reason to think that the same thing could happen to him.

Here’s where it could get real interesting. If I am someone who has played at UNC for a year or two and see them backing up the truck to funnel $$$ to an incoming transfer what do you think is going through my head?

Sure, but whiffing on the numbers for one recruit/transfer is recoverable. If they fly by the seats of their pants continually and repeatedly overpromise, they will develop a reputation among recruits. Wild promises are probably going to be successful right now whether they pan out or not, but long term they need more of these to pan out than not to avoid getting a bad reputation.

Respectfully disagree. If it’s costing us a big that we took from 40th in his recruiting class to second team all American, who appears to have genuinely loved the school, his teammates, and coaches, but will go elsewhere because a widget spit out a lowball projection (which can hardly be considered realistic due to the lack of fans last year), then we suck at this. This is simply one you can’t lose. Garcia—fine, he never played here. Brad, Josh, etc. need to get this done.

As an aside, this is why a second round loss to a mediocre Loyola team is so devastating—we had generational talent on that squad and the region got blown up. It was there for the taking and this off-season has only emphasized how difficult roster construction will be in the new Wild West of recruiting and transfers. The failure to capitalize with what I considered to be an all time regular reason squad is nauseating.

Since it's unc, there's probably a lot of empty space in their head..................and small creatures rummaging about.........

We have no idea what that widget spit out or if it is lowball. On the contrary, it's just as likely or more so that others are overpromising. Overpromising and underdelivering is not something you can do for too long without a serious reputation hit among your clientele.

You may well have better information, but it’s been said that endorsement fees have to be “reasonable”. TIFWIW The specific example I heard was a guy can’t earn $100,000 for getting a picture taken with a booster/donor/sponsor. Right now it seems that is happening. Legal or not. My opinion is whatever limits are set, if any, will be broken by the usual suspects.

I get people having high expectations and wanting to close on recruits. I feel the same.

But the fact that I've seen murmurs of "hot seat" from fans on social media is wild. We just made the tournament since who knows when and were a 1 seed. Things didn't end well, but there's a lot to be optimistic about. I'm not saying we're gonna be a top 10 team season, but I'm hopeful to end a top 25 team. Let's see how the season pans out before we start making bold statements.

How quick we forget where we were before Brad got here... I don't think these expectations would be as crazy if it wasn't for the fact he propelled us up so fast.

I don’t see our “honest broker w/NIL projections” strategy working out for us.

Blue bloods have been over-promising and under-delivering to basketball players for decades and it hasn’t slowed them down before.

How many dudes have we seen transfer from those places (especially Kentucky) when they didn’t pan out? I bet their recruiting pitches all had some flavor of “you’re a future NBA player and we will feature you in our offense with plenty of playing time”.

Then it doesn’t happen and few people care. The reputation of the blue blood perseveres, and the cycle continues. I’m sure the blame is placed at the feet of the player.

This will be no different.
