In that same 3 year stretch, 4 top 100 recruits. Nobody outside those 4. Just noting.
We missed top 60 before the turnover.
Whoops, you're right, it was 4, my mistake. Only double what the previous regime did, in around half the time. Clearly overrated. /s
It's not a straw man. You literally said Chin was overrated because he wasn't a national recruiter. I pointed out that his replacement isn't either, and his connections are very similar to Chin's (though with a different AAU program). How is that a straw man?
Interestingly, your correction made me realize Chin recruited as many top-50 guys here as OA, and the two highest. Not saying he's better than OA, just that the evidence he's overrated is pretty thin. Yes, he was only able to recruit from MIF, but that doesn't mean it wasn't effective. The guy left, we like his replacement, some of us want to build him a statue, other would like him to bring in a few recruits first. Just don't see why we need to keep selling short the accomplishments of our prior staff. They did an amazing job and helped put together a team I'm sure none of us will ever forget.
Anyway, I retire from this debate or whatever this is.
Yes, as stated before nothing mind-blowing as far as rankings. The classes that Memphis and Alabama (just to pick two non-blue bloods) are bringing in blow away a three year haul of 4 top 50 kids. That said, I bet we have a better team this season than Memphis or Alabama.
Yes but transfers and super seniors are a big part of that, as well as talent evaluation. Rankings are just rankings. If you recruit a top 20 player every year, but they are always a bust, then are you better off than the team that got a 40-50 that played above their ranks? Probably not. The key is to recruit within the range that you can, identify the ones that will out perform ranking, and use your performance to slowly move that recruitment range up over time. That’s kinda what they are doing now.
So, splitting hairs has the added benefit of being a cosmetically beneficial maneuver?
So do we have a real chance at this guy or is he just in town to visit family? Any insider info? Apologies if I’ve missed that discussion…
I dont know who recruited Giorgi, but I consider him a huge find and sign and an awesome ambassador for Illini. I would love to get him in on staff as a recruiter some day.
On related note, we seemed to have cooled on Europe recruits....

Will be interesting to see if being left behind in a terrible conference will hurt Memphis.
With Cincinnati and Houston leaving, the American conference is left with Wichita State, SMU and not much else.
Worth noting we are poised to get at least 3 top 100s the first year of the new ACs. Pretty solid start to what should continue to be done good Illini basketball

Disagree. The competition has always been a factor in recruiting and part of what kept independents and mid majors from taking the next step. On top of that is television time.
It's ironic you say this about Memphis since they've been on a constant search for a more prestigious conference.

This is year 4 for Penny, and with all the 5 star talent he’s brought in, he’s never done better than 3rd in a weak conference and has yet to even make the NCAAT. Looks like they are still in on some five stars but have lost out on a lot of prospects for this class and only have 2 3 stars committed. Is the sheen off of Penny? (Didn’t even mean to make a pun there!)

?? They have the #1 ranked recruiting class in 21. Top 5 recruits in Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren.
He landed the top 2 players in the ‘22 class just 2 months ago, but they reclassified to ‘21 so I’d say the sheen hasn’t worn off just yet in terms of recruiting.
Question still remains tho. Can he coach?
To an earlier point - not sure they are going there for the coaching either.
Yes we know they pay players, but everyone pays players now. That could be the biggest blow to their recruiting.
