I wouldn't take him back now. He did fine when he was here, but he wanted to play Miller over Curbelo as the primary ballhandler when Ayo was out. He was choosing AAU loyalties over the good of the Illinois team. That right there should disqualify him from ever coaching here again. Lol

For reference, Luka Garza beat out his sprint, agility, and shuttle times while nearly matching Bates's vertical numbers.
Garza hit 24/29 on the verticals. 3.51 on the sprint, 11.9 on agility, 3.38 on the shuttle. https://www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-strength-agility/
On top of all that, there are all sorts of stories out there about his lack of work ethic, stagnation in development after going to the prep school his dad created, etc.
So recruits want to play lesser competition and not be on national television?
To be clear, I was saying the only reason they go to Memphis is Penny and Pennies, lots and lots of them.
If competition and TV time were at the heart, they be in B10, ACC, or SEC. I don't think in my entire life, I've turned on a Memphis game during prime time on a weekend. I'm sure they have, but not on my radar.

I have no doubt that this will happen if it's necessary to gain a competitive advantage, but why does there even need to be illegal payments? The NIL situation seemingly gives "customers" such leeway in what they spend that it would seemingly not need to be an under the table payment. Why take the risk if you can just do it all above board?

Because there are rules and some people don’t like rules. Just like some people lie because they are liars even when there is no reason to. One I foresee happening all the time is schools are not allowed to make any promises on NIL money. It’s almost laughable to think that’s not going on right now.

But it's so easy to say "we project something in this range" without making promises. It's such an easy workaround that requires very little effort but remains legal. So why risk everything to do things under the table? Just for the thrill? NIL Sportsbook? I just don't get it.

Exactly. Now that big booster instead of donating a large amount to the program can just say "I'll take 50,000 of the t-shirts my favorite player is making"
I'm not sure if there's a limit on how much a player can take from any one source though. Anyone know the details on that?

So, it seems it's ok to pay the recruit $200,000 after he signs, but FWIW it's illegal to "promise" to pay the recruit $200,000 if he signs.

Sure, but it doesn't appear to be illegal to make projections, and as long as those sorts of payments aren't under the table, you can even (seemingly) safely point to precedent for why you are making said projections.
Because it’s much easier to convince a teenager to join your team if you guarantee him $X dollars rather than projecting a range. Especially if another school guarantees him $X.
Why do you think players got paid under the table before?

For one, they literally couldn't legally get paid at all. If the only drawback to staying entirely above board right now is that you can't promise dollars, but you can give projections with history to back it up, I don't see why anyone would consider that risk worth it.
