Coleman is 6'10 athletic with good handles. . He can drive to the hoop and take 5-10 footers anytime he wants.

The problem is he either can't hit that shot or won't take it.

He does not need to shoot 3's to contribute to our offense. He just needs to score!

So "limited irregular playing opportunities" is inaccurate, but you chose a 2 game sample size...

what?
we already used a full season sample size earlier in the conversation?

He averaged 19 mins per game over the year, although he was well above that average toward the end of the year

He averaged 26 mins a game and shot 20% from 3 in the NCAA Tournament this year. "limited irregular playing opportunities" is inaccurate

I'd love to see him improve and become All-B1G and an elite 3-point shooter as much as the next guy, but he needs to make a significant jump this offseason to reach that goal

Immediately preceding the bolded you used his % from....two.....games to try and make your point. Wouldn't you call that "limited"?

Like most high percentage shooters.....CoHawk has to find rhythm and flow for his 3pt % to be in the 35% range. That's not a "significant jump"...it's an expected improvement as he develops and has regular offensive sets for him to shoot open 3pt shots.

Additionally, his role this year was not conducive to finding a 3pt shooting rhythm on a team with Plummer, Trent, Grandy, and even Goode. CoHawk was at his best this year as an aggressive playmaker. It was painfully obvious (see: MOAR RJ) we needed more of that this year rather than more 3pt shooting.

Yes, it was a full season sample... which compared other players numbers as SRs to Coleman's numbers as FR/SO.

Correct that he was well above his season average toward the end of the year. As someone else pointed out, he shot 35% from 3 in his last 9 games.

The way to early rankings on ESPN today have us at 17 without Skyy or any potential transfers and Kofi back. If we are able to land some of our top transfers like TSJ and Murray or who knows possibly another big then I wonder how far we could get bumped up.
It isn't about where we're ranked , please learn from an old man of 70 , i've been a fan since I was 13 , what i've learned about Illinois basketball is that it doesn't matter where we are ranked , it's do we both really deserve to be and can we maintain it without getting big headed or feeling the pressure of being ranked . What we need is stud players who lead on and off the court , Coach Underwood needs players who are accountable to themselves and ask their teammates to be accountable . That's how we are going to make the next step happen , look at the winners and other teams that make the final four , we don't want that alone we want to be there every year , so we have to be at a higher standard and not just for one year , yet it has to start somewhere . RIGHT !

The point is that Hawkins is not a good outside shooter. 28% is not good

He could end up being a good outside shooter (certainly has the physical tools) but to consider him one at this moment in time is misleading and premature
Hawkins was nearly 30% on threes this past season.......

AND, 30% from 3-pt range is equivalent to 45% from 2-pt land. Both are absolutely acceptable in NCAA Division 1 basketball......especially for a 6-10 stretch "4" who plays really strong defense.

I'd want this guy playing 35/min a game for me.

Roger could also miss a three at the top of the key and following said miss with a monster dunk. And he could do that in a final 4 game. :)
Not in the Final Four, but pretty sure I recall a miss from around the free throw line that CoHawk put back with righteous indignation.
And maybe you remember the announcers making a Powell reference when he did it.

Yes, very. He made more threes than Coleman his first two years, FWLIW.
*Checks math*.... 22 for Coleman, 23 for Roger. Carry on.

That is the lasting image I have in my head from that weekend in St Louis. My upper deck, baseline seat had a perfect birds eye view of both the initial shot and his slam follow-up. Probably remember that for the rest of my days.

Need him to take those midrange shots. Not sure if it’s confidence or coaching. He seemed consistently open and made turnovers trying to pass.

He needs to work on those 5-10 footers in addition to his outside shot. I think his shooting motion looks pretty good. It's a matter of repetition and muscle memory. 10s of thousands of jump shots in the off-season. Plummer-style practice regimen.

He also needs to work on being more decisive out there. If you're going to take it to the hoop, go hard. If you're going to stop for a 8-foot jumper, then stop and get a good base and let muscle memory take over.

I think he can be really good, but there's work to do. And to me, he seems like the kind that's willing to work at his game.

2021 38% from 3 pt 524 attempts as team (81 ppg)
Grandison 41% and Williams 55% were lights out from 3. Ayo was 39%. Trent was the lowest at 36%. Surrounding Kofi with 4 shooters was why we were a #1 seed, Top 4 team.

2022 37% from 3 pt 779 attempts as team
Grandison 41% (injured for Indiana, UT Chatanooga, and Houston,) Williams 33% Frazier 33% Plummer 41% Hawkins 29%. Big 10 champs #4 seed

vs UT Chatanooga we were 3-17 from 3 18% (76 ppg)
vs Houston we were 6-25 24%

Our bad 3 point shootin was not on Coleman Hawkins. However he only scored 3 points in 19 minutes. If he is going to play 30 minutes per game we need at least 10 ppg from him.

Coleman Hawkins played with 7 other Div 1 recruits at Profic Prep his sr year and was probably the #4 or #5 option. He never learned to score. He might have been better off staying in Sacramento averaging 25 ppg SR year and developing his offensive game.

Prolific prep 2020 class
Jalen Green-> Houston Rockets
Nimari Burnett -> Alabama
Saba Gigaberia -> Georgia Tech
Frank Ansalem-> Syracuse
Jaden Jones -> Rutgers
Mawot Mag-> Rutgers
Coleman Hawkins -> Illinois

you need accountability for sure but you can't win without talent. Your not much older than me. My dad had season tickets since 72. I also don't know much about the teams in the final four except they had talent, size, and athletes we didn't have. I think our players played hard, cared, and and held each other accountable. Our small guards and players outside of Kofi we're overmatched in experience l, size and athletic ability That's one reason I wish RJ, Goode and Hawk had played more. I never doubted our seniors effort.

LOVE LOVE the 3s! But don't we need to score more 2s? Which final four team made it there and beyond relying on the 3...

Coleman ought to score at least 10 ppg on fast breaks and offensive rebounds. Add some nice drives to the basket and he can be 15 ppg without even taking a 3 pointer.
