Isn't most NIL money attached in some way to the brand of the school as well? Since the school owns the rights to that, it makes sense to me that it would get a cut.

If it had any Illinois trademarked graphics. I’m guessing, and as the last poster said, University taking a cut makes co-marketing the player and school legit. Otherwise everything thing Kofi did that might reference Illinois Basketball could be viewed as a “payment” from Illinois.

Part of me would like to see him come here and have an All BIG type year after only playing 2 minutes a game at Kentucky. Maybe future recruits will look at the Blue Bloods a little differently!

Quite literally the most common situation with any recruit in any sport.
Illinois is one of a few schools who hired people to specifically advise their athletes on their money, taxes, etc…..but ultimately he is in charge of what he does with it.

Our rules must have changed since the beginning. IL was originally one of the places that wasn’t allowing players wear anything licensed or trademarked. Others could wear anything and seems like there was a third category that was maybe somewhere in the middle.
Also I thought the staff was steering kids more towards the Guardian NIL monies so Open Endorse wouldn’t take a cut.
Funny how fast things seem to change.
