He led Miami to an Elite Eight and then saw some new guy come in and get $800k + a car. I kind of understand why he would want more money. It's a weird dynamic, but I bet we'll see this more often.

I understand too, and am concerned about how this plays out across the high-profile, fortune-generating (for coaches, ADs, talking heads, once-in-a-while AAU etc. operators/coaches, and maybe now college student-athletes) NCAA sports. All of this is predictable from the way things have been going on in summer travel basketball for the last 3ish decades. Watching the vultures spiraling around a 13 or 14 year old burgeoning start is ... revolting. Now we will see some of this play out in college.

I am not saying every guy transferring is (1) being taken advantage of or (2) is a selfish jerk. Many transfers will be very well-reasoned, rationale, fair and completely ethical. Some will not.

This unanticipated aspect of unregulated NIL activity is very worrisome from the point of view of building a team. I don't mean assembling players.

I mean getting a group of young men to believe in their team mates and the program they have committed to with their team mates is always challenging. This emotional process is absolutely vital in establishing an actual team. And the setbacks of losing, not starting, blunt coaching and so on do NOT help with moment-to-moment team building, although these all can contribute importantly to building a strong team in the long run. Including over more than one season, with guys battling to overcome all the hurdles that challenge any member of any team.

Miserable to be a CBB coach right now …

You’re going to see a lot of guys starting to retire early or head to the NBA … I’ve had coaches who consistently have top 25 teams tell me “it’s not even enjoyable anymore.”
I do think sanity will return once the market sets itself and athletes know what they can reasonably expect. Right now everyone seems to be worried someone else might get a bigger cut.

Pardon my ignorance...I was under the impression the NIL stuff was basically a way for the players to get sponsorship and sell things with their name, image, or likeness. Now it seems like the school/athletic department is offering money to the players...? Is that correct?

Not the school or AD. Has to be somebody outside of the school, I believe. So, alumni or boosters with boatloads of money.

If retiring early with millions stacked in the bank or taking a better job to make more millions is being miserable I would kill to be miserable lol

I have also talked to a few kids that are just outside the top 100. They are worried about the impact of the portal on picking their dream school, and then free agency changing that. Things are so wild right now.
