Yeah, but I wonder how accurate the posts predicting minutes for last year’s team during the off season were. I’m guessing outside of the minutes predicted for maybe Trent and Kofi, they weren’t very accurate. Granted Curbelo was hurt, so that messed with predictions, but I’m guessing the minutes predicted for Hawk, RJ and Goode were pretty far off. But I get it, not much else to do as as we wait for the next piece of real news.
Accuracy is not relevant here. What matters is whether players will hit the portal due to this imagination.

This team will be a lot of fun to watch next year…

I'm up for this but Hawkins in the Hopkins spot. So much height and athleticism. Could switch almost anything and could play a true 5 out with 5 shooter/slasher/ passers. And the second 5 would be almost as good as the first 5 just a little more limited defensively. I think this roster is the most talented UI has had since the Deron and Dee days.

Just have to say after reading ALL THE RECRUITING POSTS from the last two days, how anyone can think that Nance will be an Illini and CoHawk will leave is beyond the ability of my feeble mind to grasp. Hawkins, IMHO, should be hoping that the Illini can find him a front court running mate like Nance that can match the level of B1G inside play needed to elevate this team into a contender. However, I have seen no indication that that possibility is more than a remote dream. There is always a probability to be assigned, but it seems the description of that probability is accurately described as "extremely remote" AND beyond the ability of some posters to grasp its meaning. Sure, it would be a good thing....but the words "ain't happenin'" apply. My pure and meaningless guess? Coleman is not thinking about the portal but instead is working on his foot speed, strength, handle, 7ft. running sky flip and 10 ft. pull up jumper at the buzzer to win the B1G title!! And Nance? He is absorbed in his dream of playing in the NBA rather than playing with some guys in C-U he does not know in front of a fan base that has downplayed his talent for the last four years.

I agree. Nance, while possible, seems a long shot at this time. Good chance he remains in the Draft. And if not, we’re one of dozens of teams that will go after him.

However, we will add a PF/C. Given our depth chart, that’s virtually a necessity.

I don’t think Nance is necessarily a long shot but there is no certainty at this point though. It needs time to play out.

I would like to see a back up center who can hold his own for 10-15, foul trouble and all. I feel good about the rest of the team as it stands. A lot of pluggable parts and they can then run all night. I see moments of 6'6 playing point, forward, and subbing out not by position but based on offensive or defensive needs.
40 minutes x 5 positions run 8-10 deep based on earning it is still 20 minutes each if just done equally....plenty of minutes. The only scare for me is at center because who knows if Hawk and Dain will not have games where fouls get the best of them, you know like pestering Hunter lol

Definitely gotta replace the large hole in the paint left by the Kofi/BBV/Payne trio's departure. We need someone who can battle down low with H. Dickinson and the Purdue bigs, and then ultimately beat down Tshiebwe in the Final Four.

I hope we add both a stretch 4 (Nance?) AND a shot-blocking, rebounding stud center (Bates?) The backcourt is pretty well set if not crowded with talent that will require Underwood to substitute in waves. The only minutes that seem to be available are in the front court. If we fulfill those "needs" I don't see any Big 10 team outclassing us, certainly by February/March.

@Goldtop it feels like we lost "almost all of them" to the transfer portal only b/c those exits coincided with losing all 5 of our seniors + Kofi to the draft. We've lost 4 guys to the transfer portal. While that is a decent number, those 4 guys played a total of 860 minutes for us last year. For reference, Kofi played 859. Trent played 1,076. Now, Belo would've played more if not for all the injuries, but when you look at it that way, it's more like we lost one productive starter rather than 4 significant contributors. The guys coming in more than make up for our transfers out (like way more). The real question is can they make up for our seniors (and Kofi of course).
@TheFameProtector I like the way you laid this out. The numbers will change if our insiders are correct and Hawkins also enters the portal. But putting that aside, I don't look at the Freshman as being the replacements for the transfers. They were (outside of Skyy) coming in this summer anyway. I look at what transfers we get to replace the players who transferred out.

We will have to see come this fall what the team looks like. But none of us can say that most of the players we get from the portal to replace the ones who leave will put us in a better spot than having players who were are already here and already knew Underwoods system.

I trust Underwood and the staff, and they have done a masterful job with transfers overall. I am excited about the team he has put together so far. I will just enjoy the ride. It is a good time to be an Illini fan.

I really like the idea of Hawkins at the 4 and Nance at the 5. Don’t think their games are similar at all.
Do you mean their games don’t mesh well together? Kofi’s game wasn’t and won’t ever be similar to anyone he shares the front court with.

Does anyone know how to stream the Iverson classic game Epps is playing in today? Starts at 3pm I believe.

Well, I don't think that's particularly fair. I think Shannon is better than him. Don't you? I think Nance is better than him. Don't you?

That doesn't mean he's in over his head. It means if Nance comes Hawkins' role on the team is diminished. Hopefully he's up for the reduced role from what would have happened on a weaker team.

It's really no different than the calculations made by most of these transfers. Some chance Nance doesn't come here because of Hawkins. Not because he'd be "over his head" just that it impacts his role on the team.

Every player is going to see these things a bit different.
Shannon didn't become an Illini to play the 4 position.
