The coaching staff also said that Omar Payne had a great mid range jumpshot, that Curbelo was getting drafted in 2022, that Austin Hutcherson was the best athlete on the team and gave Ayo fits during practice, the list goes on. I have full confidence in our roster figuring it out and being good next year - this post is not aimed at criticizing anything the staff is doing. It's more to just point out that the staff says a lot of things during the offseason, some of which may be true and many of which may just be preseason hype train
I think Hutch was the best athlete on the team. We saw clips of his explosive leaping abilty and agility. He just got a sports hernia and had nagging back issues. I don't recall them saying Omar had a great mid range game. I remember them saying it was better than they thought it was. Nor do I recall them saying anyone was being drafted in 2022, just that they are projected in a certain range. Much like Hawkins is now on ESPN at 40. Sometimes what people hear is not actually what the Staff actually said but u do agree the staff certainly uses positive encouragement as motivation. People also did miss interpreted what TA said about Dainja having as good a chance as anyone to be a one and done. I originally did myself so I am not harping in you. Lol

I would think it depends who they need to guard or our opponent.

Peremiter defender likely Shannon or Rodgers.

Interior defender vs a big body then Dainja.

A Uber quicker PG like Belo was then hopefully Skyy.

It seems we have some very good defenders but vs certain opponents like Edey or some others we will be overmatched and require a team effort at times.
I would say Mayer is the best all-around defender on the team, he will be a finalist for B1G defensive player of the year.

I don't remember clips of Hutch doing it in actual game action. Having a high vertical leap (as typically tested) is only a starting point. Throwing it down in game time is a different thing and takes more than just a high vertical leap.

Remember Calvin Brock. He supposedly had like a 40" inch vertical. But did you ever see him dunk in someone's face? He was a good defender, but he wasn't a slam-bam kid.

I am convinced the only people who post on this board are all connected to the program, and then there is myself. Everyone is either a player, coach, opponent, scout, etc… and I am the only one that isn’t one of those. I have now reached insider status. I have cracked the code!

Let me know if anyone wants to know something. I know everyone now.

No insider here, I am just here for the gifs and snarky comments.

Having no dog in the race, it will be interesting and unpredictable to see a) who takes the floor on opening game b) who takes the floor in first B1G game, and c) who takes the floor for the first rd. NCAA tourney game...if there is one. I would bet they are not the same...in fact...there is little chance of that happening IMHO for many reasons.
More interested in who finishes game
a) opening day
b) First B1G game
c) NCCA tourney game(s)

He certainly used every inch of that vertical on the sideline after Deron’s three in Rosemont.

I am aware how athletic ability is measured since I have a Master's in Physical Education and have conducted those drills and tests. Playing basketball and dunking the ball in a game is not how it is done or accurately measured. Sure you can see those traits in games but that's why they do sprints, verticals, broad jumps, bench presses, agility tests and so on so they can be accurately measured You can certainly tell if someone is athletic by playing but just because someone doesn't dunk in a game doesn't mean they aren't athletic enough to do so. I saw Hutch jump up and touch the beam above the backboard. He clearly is a very explosive leaper. If others had done that it would have been posted. They did not. Hutch may not have had the skill of others but I do believe them when they said he was the most athletic player on the team. I'm sure they have that data measured to track progress
Hutch had some bad luck. I hope that changes and I wish him nothing but the best.

The stuff on Curbelo and Hutcherson was likely true. Devastating injuries can change everything.

Brock couldn’t do any of this. Competition level doesn’t matter (just like high school highlights). Look at the skill set. Athleticism. Shooting off dribble. Movement. Ballhandling. Health was the issue.

Curbello had to develop and outside shot, learn to play team offense instead of just dribbling around in circles, and establish himself as good defender.

Last year he regressed. Even before the injury he was not impressive (see Marquette game). He also became a turnover machine.

He played with such joy and flair his freshman year you could not help but like him. Taking the next step was to become a #1 option and team leader. Hopefully it happens for him at St Johns.

This is so false lol. He has never even guarded a college player yet and some of you think he is the next Scottie Pippen. He is behind Goode.
Ratio

In all honesty, folks are going to have to prepare themselves for players getting over recruited. Goode is a solid piece, but I think it will become evident quickly that Ty is ahead of him. Goode could be a transfer candidate if he doesn't like his tick this season.

The staff says things in passing that we overemphasis. Most of the arguments occur when they are taken out of context. Do not believe they know who the starters and/or rotation is at this point. Also believe it could change several times during the season. They surely have an idea but until they see them together in competition it is not solidified. We however, as we don’t get to see practices are not incumbered by facts but free to judge on a video seen here or there.

He was not healthy all year, including the Marquette game.
