Just because a kid isn't that highly ranked, doesn't negate the possibility that he's a heavy lean.

BTW, Pierce is yet another seriously underrated player.
247's own rankings have him at #90. Looks like he's pulled up in the composite by a #74 ESPN ranking, but as I recall general consensus on this board is 247>>>>>>>ESPN at talent evaluation. Not to say that either is right or wrong, or that #90 is bad, just pointing out that if this recruit is underrated generally he's even more underrated by the guys we trust.

The good thing is he appears to be trending the right direction. Composite had him at #115 and 247 had him at #204 as recently as 5/24/22.

As long as he brings the bag with him … 😉
Yep. TA has a lot behind that nice smile.

However, it points out that in the longer run we'll see an interesting mix of factors where the ability to outbid others won't be the sole determinant.

Will they get me to the league?
Do I have a chance for a National Title?

Various professional teams have seen players willing to accept a bit less in compensation to achieve other goals, especially a title. This is why success on the above factors is going to be important in the next couple years.

I also anticipate some "super team" movement. two or three players moving all at once to one spot to try to grab a title.

It's a bumpy ride because the college basketball road is really still under construction.

Trust rating services? Surely, you jest.

Part of their game is a slow rise for kids that came onto their radar late. Can't vault a kid from ~200 to ~50, even if it's fully warranted, because they'll get egg on their face. For the millionth time, staff evaluations >>> rating services.

I don't disagree with you at all. I do disagree with this notion that 247 is some superior service, that always seems to crop up whenever they have one of our guys ranked ahead of Rivals or ESPN.

I've always maintained that offers are a better indicator than rankings/ratings (or highlight video evaluations on message boards for that matter). Why did Pierce's ratings go up? Because he got some impressive of P5 offers, including ours. Simple as that. 247 was actually slower on this one than the other services.

OSU, OU, and Mizzery out front in this one. Has visited all three.

He visits then that could change … 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agree. Minnesota was his first of four OV's so far, so he has a final one to use if he so chooses. He's a self described combo forward. With PF Thomas Haugh recently committing to Gators as a 2023, perhaps he will take that OV to the Illini. Anything can happen. Starts to put pressure on Amani Hansberry to decide too ... although I'd take the true PF over Pierce, if it came to it.

Overall, I do think 247's ratings are better, but that is based purely on observation (subjective to the nth). World's tallest midget, I suppose.

Yes, offers tell a lot. Funny how new (and improved!) offers coincide with ratings bumps. Did the player all of a sudden get better? Probably not, he just got on better programs' radar.

yeah, we may be at a good enough spot to potentially get him even if he does shoot up a few big spots, but it's always tough when the "blue bloods" come poking around

Most recent update on James Brown recruiting - interview with him.

Illinois is in good shape. TA on the lead. If had to pick his eventual other top schools for OV's (which are not even allowed until August 1st, 2022); they would be tOSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech.

He's going to take his time with more unofficial visits starting this summer and then narrow down to his OV list. As a rising upcoming junior in high school, ofc he's enthralled by the blue blood offers from places like UNC, Duke, and UCLA. Not many kids his age wouldn't be.

It's way early, but like our chances.

The Ayo "all business" vibe is very strong in that video. I hope JB has Ayo type allegiance to his home state.

It will be interesting to see how these shifts of arguably the biggest programs in the P10 and B12 leaving could hurt teams like Okla St or others recruiting guys like Pierce in hoops or any sport. With the shifts it would seem to help SEC or B10 teams in college recruiting. With Pierce's final 5 all but one is from the B10 or SEC. I think this will happen even more going forward.

Umm…Illinois is a big fish.

UCLA and USC to B10 makes the B10 even stronger. Both are top 20 teams. Not sure how much 18 kids worry about this stuff.

The B12 is still an excellent basketball conference Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech.

SEC has Kentucky, Arkansas, then it drops off. LSU was up and coming till the NCAA finally caught up

I think TA has proven that there is still some allegiance going on.

Delusional at best. :). But, great that thought exists.

When there are alums of some schools peddling how much they doled out it is very, very hard to believe our school is not up there, if not beating them outright.

Delusional? Nah, don't think so. For example, I doubt we get Skyy without TA. I am not naïve and think that NIL doesn't have an influence. All I am saying is that the original post I was commenting on, said allegiance was gone. I simply gave my opinion that I think allegiance is still a factor. That allegiance may be a school, or a person/coach, but I still feel it plays a role in recruiting.

Same with Rodgers. And same with Harris and Epps (Chester). Part of being a great AC is excelling at cultivating relationships.

Welch was injured and had a medical redshirt, so he graduated with Winters et al.

Ken Colliers- Norman was originally part of the 1982 class. He was headed to Wisconsin but signed with us when their coach left.
Norman was a nonqualifier out of high school and attended Wabash Valley College where he was coached by Mark Coomes (Lou Hanson's nephew). He only played there for one year before transferring to Illinois. He had to sit out that first year at Illinois and then played for three.

Yep. That is how Snake became part of the senior class in 1986-1987 with Tony Wysinger and Doug Altenberger. Wysinger was a late addition in the spring of 1983 after Harper turned pro.
