Honestly, I’m surprised we would even entertain HD, especially after a year in which the coaches struggled to find a way to get massively talented pieces to work together and buy into a culture.

And that’s with guys who weren’t showing up and already working from a net negative like HD. Guys that weren’t known as douche bags/social media terrors/B1G villains. Guys that weren’t considered public enemy #1 by our specific fan base and directly feuded with our fan base. Guys that have an extremely high likelihood of being a cancer in the locker room…etc.

We ran that experiment this past year with neutral transfers coming in…and saw the results. We were predicted to be a top league team with the ability to make a March run and fell well short. I’m just not sure why we would try that all again with HD.

We can’t simply take someone’s average points/rebounds and add it in and wish away the negative variables.

But whatever, it’s BU’s job to make it work. If HD is really in play, I hope it works out for us. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was trying to figure out a way to say that, but you did it way better than I could have. I think in Dickinson's case it would be subtraction by addition. I didn't see Michigan lighting up the courts this season with the guy.

If you don't like the term "massively talented", that's fine. But TSJ was first team all Big Ten and Mayer was third team, so coaches and media disagree with you. If you're considering HD "massively talented", he came in between at second team. All are very talented players.
Ok, let's consider this, you mention the All Big Ten Team...how many Big Ten teams are left? The last three years, how many got to the second weekend? This isn't just an Illinois issue. This is an entire conference issue. The athletes/talent in the Big Ten don't favorably compare to any of where we're seeing.

Not according to Ken Pom. I believe the BIG was #1 last year and #2 this year. The NCAA tournament isn’t the only time we play non-conference games.

When you watch the Big Ten play.....then you watch the SEC, Big 12 and Big East, you see the same level of athletes?

Edit to add:. When you look at the NBA draft, are you seeing the same level of talent?

I just find it ironic that the same people whining about Epps leaving and saying things like his talent level outweighed his sometimes bad attitude are now the same people complaining that we’re MAYBE going after HD… an even more talented player.

I am. I hated Jim Edmonds the most of the players on those Cards teams.
I got over it.
Didn’t take my cardinals fan friends long to come around to Willson joining them.
Yep. Put on aCubs uniform and I root for them. Only guy I can say I didn’t really root for (though never rooted against was Bobby Murcer. And that wasn’t his fault. He just happened to be key piece of a trade I was really pissed about.

I'm talking about 2 or 3 players being "talented". If you want to compare Illinois games against conference and non-conference teams, ask UCLA and Texas if they think TSJ is talented.

Illini need to build something instead of piecing a bunch of players together by glue every season. If it means missing the Tournament one season but leads to something big going forward, then I'm all for it.
You mean like signing 6 freshmen like this year. Oh wait, only 3 will be on the team next year. No guarantees the something you build will be around in a year or two. All things being equal, I agree with you. Things is NIL and portal doesn’t make things “equal.”

We're going down a path of nitpicking, but if we want to go down that road, if TSJ played like that for 30 games, we'd have been 30-0, he'd have been BTPOY, a First Team All American and a top 10 draft pick. TSJ is an exceptional player. That's not even in question(to be clear). He was flat out special for those two games, was really good is most others and he was non existent in a handful. He was a microcosm of our season.

On the whole, which I think was the point, he's a very high level player....just not as high as 35-40 others. Fair?

Downey's reply: Three CCIW centers who would have devoured Lieb: IWU's Jack Sikma, North Park's Michael Harper and Millikin's Leon Gobcznski. Carthage Point guard and scoring machine Steve Djurickovic would have been highly successful at any Big 10 school. He turned down D1 offers so he could play for his dad in college. I apologize for answering twice. Sometimes I'm not quite sure how to edit or delete.

Downey's post took me down memory lane. I watched Sikma and Gobczynski play several times including against each other when I was a kid. While Gobzcynski was 6-10 and might have been listed as a center, I do not recall him being much of an interior player at all though it was a long time ago. He was a fantastic shot - saw him drop 60 one night. He would have been tough for Lieb to guard. I recall him as an unathletic Larry Bird. It was uncanny how he could catch a pass then turn and shoot before the defender could react. IWU successfully defended him by going for the block immediately when he caught the ball. Seem to recall Sikma blocking him more than once. That IWU team was pretty darn good - there was another guy besides Sikma that I think got a hard look by an NBA team as well.
Leon Gobzcynski was my elementary principal

I've seen this sort of claim a lot recently - i.e. that "the same people" are making contradictory arguments over time.

I have no stats to indicate it's incorrect, but I am suspicious of the claims.

Even as someone who spends too much time reading this board, there's only like a half dozen posters I recognize enough, and to whom I pay enough attention over time to notice whether their posts, in aggregate, adhere to some set of consistent positions. But maybe that just means I'm a sociopath? 🤔

It seems more likely that we're mistakenly viewing most of the posters on here as part of some fictional monolithic "other", whom we can attack as being illogical and incoherent, but only because we're buying into that illusion.

I've seen someone I had a direct conversation with regarding Epps and his leaving make about 4-5 posts talking specifically about HD and how he hates him and doesn't want his attitude on our team. That same person I told that I didn't mind Epps leaving as much because of his poor attitude, lack of size, inability to run an offense as a guard, and horrible defensive play; they completely disagreed with me and directly replied to my comments. But sure, I am just imagining it.

During his one year in Oakland, Harry was asked if he still liked Busch and he said that he never touched the stuff. Assuming he meant the beer.

Well, it was just a theory ... certainly didn't mean it as an attack on you.

Regardless if he is likable HD makes this team a favorite for Big Ten championship. He is by far the best center available. Dainja while I like him isn't At HD level. Grab him and a real pg will go along way in building for next year. Only have to stand HD for 1 season I can manage that if winning

Which is fair. Some point earlier in the season I attacked @illini0440 for something he didn't say, but I thought he had said. It was months later, and the person who had actually said it and 0440 had both replied to my comment and I mixed them up. 0440 is my favorite insider (no offense to the others) cause he is the sassiest and funniest.

As for this scenario, the debate over Jayden happened a few days ago and I can go back into my comment history and see that I am correct with my assumption that it is the same person. Plus, this time I didn't use names so I don't sound like an idiot again in case I am wrong.

Or just relax and let it go
