You just proved the point that free agency isn’t killing baseball lol the game is actually growing

Unrelated to free agency, but MLB attendance certainly hasn't been growing.

>> Major League Baseball has seen attendance drop nine straight seasons when taking 2020 out of the mix. Since the last increase (+1.97% from 2011 to 2012) league attendance has dropped -14%. <<

With all of these dying or dead sports writhing around on the floor of the entertainment world, maybe this is the perfect time for me to end my fandom and take up knitting and learn Latin.

Did you see all the photos of empty stadiums on opening day? I can't say much about numbers from 1976 vs today, but if you look at numbers pre-pandemic it is clear there has been some loss of following over the last 15 years or so. From 2007 to 2019 (again, pre-pandemic) attendance dropped every season and was down 14% total. I know that, at least locally here, it is becoming difficult to get kids to play anything other than basketball or football past junior high, and I am located in the Midwest where baseball is (or should be) a big deal.
I wonder what the TV ratings are? Someone mentioned cord cutting and that is true, but the cord is just a delivery method. There are more stations carrying the games available than ever, via wireless internet and satellite TV. I have no idea of changes in TV ratings over the past few decades.

While I don’t want to get caught up in a debate over the merits of MLB free agency, I have a hard time accepting a system where people are denied the ability to choose where they want to work, attend college, etc.
Exactly. And as an extension of that (and not to get into coach yellyface arguments), how many people have been stuck working for real d-bags or in generally toxic environments because you have to pay rent / mortgage payments? Having the ability to vote with your feet is sometimes the only (and most powerful) option you have to effect change, or simply walk away from a bad situation. It’s easy to fall back on the greed argument, but there is often times a lot more going on in the background. Case in point, my daughter is dating a former division 1 basketball player, who had to deal with all kinds of racist nonsense, especially when playing for a school in Arizona. That and other pressures from the program are ultimately what made his choice to transfer out. We all need to be able to walk away when it’s clear the culture is just too toxic and it’s clear that it won’t change.

Major League Baseball and college basketball aren't the same, and I don't think starting from a conviction that there is One Right Answer that covers how both of them should be set up and operated is correct.

College sports in particular is weird, we like it because it's weird, and we should be willing to acknowledge the possibility that there is value in the parts of it that don't make particular sense.

Not everything has to be the same.
