maybe its the wrong time of the day, but the insiders seem to noticeably quiet right now......
lol three of them posted in this thread a few hours ago. It's April. The deadline to enter the portal isn't till the middle of May. The deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft is June 12th. Patience.

Edit: and oh yeah, we picked up a player *checks notes* YESTERDAY

Perhaps they simply do not think it’s worth it commenting on the chance of an All American from a rival school being willing to pay his way with his NIL $, to come here as a walk on……or some of the other outlandish questions posed here.
I get that we all love UIUC and our basketball program. But goodness, sometimes the takes and the queries are downright silly.

The starting five I think most of us can agree on:

1. Good, skilled, experienced PG
2. Skilled dawg
3. Skilled dawg
4. Skilled dawg
5. Skilled dawg

Brad‘s job is to throw that bone out on the court every day.
I think that we had the dawgs last season, but they were mostly peeing on things, sniffing butts, humping legs, barking, howling, scratching, and being jealous when their head wasn't getting scratched as much as another dawg. When they were called to the bench they usually turned around 3 times, laid down, and gnawed a bone instead of jumping around yelping encouragement to the part of the pack currently on the court.
IMHO the trainer needs to be sure that they can understand and carry out his commands without confusion. Otherwise they are just a pack of dogs making noise, but not actually herding the cattle into the pen.

Starters:
PG
TJ
Domask
QG
Hawkins

Bench:
Dain
Harmon
Ty
Goode
Hansberry
Buck

There will only be 3 out of this group who get significant tick … Earn your minutes … There will be competition …

Guys who won’t play meaningful minutes:
DGL
Moretti
I guess I’m thinking Dain starts because some of you have stated we have our starting five. But understandably we won’t always be playing a traditional lineup in todays game.

And I have blind optimism that Ty’s shot will improve enough to warrant a starting spot with Domask and Goode being our sharp shooters off the bench.

The question still stands. If the baseline is that he hasn't won a Big Ten regular season championship, tournament championship or NCAA Tournament championship every year...then the comment holds water. I'm not a big fan of second place, but 20+ wins year in and year out with our only complaint being that we haven't gotten to the Sweet 16, I'll take it. Do people remember where this program was at before he took over? Awfully short memories by some(not saying you).
Either that or some people's memories are long enough to remember a 9 seed being somewhat pedestrian*.

Here's the problem that the transfer portal causes. Yes, on the surface, 20+ wins and a 9 seed is fine. But when you are rebuilding your roster every year there's a greater sense of urgency to win as much as possible, right now. If a 9 seed and 2nd round flameout becomes the norm, people will rightfully grow frustrated. However, like others have said, if a 9 seed is our "down year", then awesome! We're on the right track.

*Because I know there are people out there who think it's absurd for Illinois fans to expect a higher seed (or to even make the tournament regularly), from 1979 when the NCAA began seeding the tournament until JG's lone tourney appearance in 2013, our average seed was an 8. That includes years we missed the tournament which I gave a seed value of 17. So, except for the 6 year death march from '14 - '19, a 9 seed is literally below average for us.

We've seen 4 years of QG and he's an above average PF whose metrics say he is an above average offensive player and below average defensive player. I think he's a guy that raises the floor, but I thought there was a lot of hype about Hansberry maybe even starting. So to take away his ability to learn to get a guy that may provide only a nominal impact difference, seems questionable. In a vacuum, I like the signing, but if it might cost us Hansberry, I don't like it.

Before I get trampled here, I 100% support Brad and think he has the ability to play this portal three card monte shell game. However, if it stops working and you've spent 2+ years recruiting over your highly-ranked freshman to get a rental and they leave and new recruits see you may just put them at the end of the bench and top end portal guys see you can't bring a bunch of new guys together and develop them and get them to play as a team, the bottom will fall out and you will have nothing.

I'm not saying this is the reality, but could be. In a perfect world, you develop your young guys and pick up transfers for depth and fill in roles. Brad is not Groce, he has contingency plans and is a great evaluator of talent. We will never be stuck in mediocrity long, if at all. Sadly with the portal and NIL, it's impossible to look at a roster and extrapolate that out over 4 years, so you have to plan for this year only, because Adam Miller or Curbelo or Epps or Clark may happen again. There are no guarantees and everything is a one-year contract. Brad is doing his job, I would go about it a different way.

The most valuable commodity is a transfer with multiple years of "control" since he can't transfer again without losing a year. It's now better to go play for a mid major, show out and then find your way to a P5 program instead of sitting a year. Now that I have successfully become a ChiefGritty disciple, let the hate rain down.
So would you prefer not to add another PF/C with only three on the roster (and that's counting Hawkins)? You add talent/depth if you can and this is a good example of that. If Hansberry is good enough he will play.

Can you blame them? They keep telling us the news, but most keep arguing about playing time for incoming freshmen, or who has the best cheeseburger, or other sandwich. Nobody has even talked about the Horseshoe, Philly Cheesesteak, Cuban, Prime Rib, etc. etc. etc.

I am literally up to 26 people blocked, lol

Try going to 7U/8U baseball tournaments. A single team had a Brixton, Braxton, and Bruxton. It's wild out here.
Oh yeah.. I totally get it. My high school team even has some interesting names now lol that’s my nicknames and somewhat-professional monikers work better for me. Sometimes I just refer to them as “hey idiot” and they’ll listen.
