I'm not trying to single you out but I don't understand this mindset. What did he do wrong? He went to the end of the evaluation process and listened to what the scouts had to say. Listened to all the coaches that were recruiting him, and then make a decision on what he felt was best for him. He never committed to us. We didn't have to keep recruiting him. Since he chooses someone else than us it leaves a bad taste in several of your mouths. Don't understand that at all.
He didnt do anything wrong our coaching staff did in waiting for him

No we weren't. We started Senior-Super Senior-Junior-Redshirt Sophomore-Sophomore by the end of the season. That is not particularly young, three of those players are back (thank god) and two are gone. At the start of last season, it looked like we had 4 Super Freshman that were all Big Ten ready caliber players that we were all stoked about. Well, two of those left (the two that could play the position we no longer have anyone on the roster capable of playing), the other two are still there, but can't shoot so we are crossing our fingers heavily that they've improved in that facet in order to be real offensive contributors at a Big Ten level.
But we were inexperienced and very new to one another. A lot of these guys will have played together for over a year by the time the season starts (not the transfers or freshmen, but TSJ, Hawkins, Goode, Dain, Rodgers, and Harris is a great nucleus of chemistry). Last year there wasn't any chemistry. And Goode is healthy, he'll be a key factor. Chemistry will make a huge difference. While I would like a veteran PG, I like our roster. We have a lot of talented players, players that can play/guard different positions, and a handful of dogs. I feel like this will be a lot closer to the team with Frazier/Ayo where they played for one another than last year's team.

TSJ
Hawkins
Goode
Dain
Rodgers
Harris
Quincy
Domask
Harmon
Hansberry

Go Illini!

I'm just not sure who's available. Zyon Pullin already announced his top 4 or 5 schools. If we can belatedly get in there that would be awesome but I'm not sure that's a possibility.

What about DeShawndre Washington from New Mexico State? Morgan Park kid. He's 6-7 but listed as a guard. Averaged 12 points, 7 boards, 4 assists last year. Haven't watched film on him, but the location makes sense. Wouldn't be a true PG though obviously.

Per On3, the highest-rated PG left in the portal behind Pullin is.... Andre Curbelo. There just don't seem to be many great options out there.

Kinyon Hodges from EIU is in the portal -- he's a combo guard but averaged 14.4 points and 2.7 assists. 35.3% from 3.
There are grad transfers not in the portal that can join still. There will be a lot of nervous schools the next few days.

Not much when you can do when:
Kid makes a promise
Kid goes behind your back and goes on another college visit
You up the NIL (Highest by far for any of the schools)
Get kids family behind Illinois
Kid still goes somewhere else
No ones' "fault" but RayJ's. Hope we face them in the final four this year.

another layer to this whole PG debacle. Brac went all in on Boswell when Fears wanted to come here. How much would you wish fears was in this recruiting class now? This isn’t some isolated incident with Brad…
I think this is a fair talking point.

Anyone know the story with Trey Woodbury? From what I can see he’s played 5 years but only played 2 games one year(presumably due to injury) and so would need a waiver. I’ve seen reports that he’s in the portal but have seen conflicting information as to whether his waiver was approved or denied. Anyone know whether he is an option?

Do the grad transfers have ANY sort of deadline? I mean, other than the season starting.

RayJ owed the Illini nothing. He's a merc, going to the third team in his career, probably not going to make a ton of money in pro basketball and had to do what he had to do. Play silly games (trying to build your roster entirely through the transfer portal) and win silly prizes. Nobody should be surprised when you go the route of hiring 1 year mercenaries and then they behave like mercenaries.
This would only be true if we had a crystal ball (a real one) that allows us to see what other players on the roster are doing.

Absolutely not …

We had TSJ, Mayer, Hawkins, and a bunch of guys who played little or no college basketball. How is that experienced?

There is a big difference in between saying this with knowledge of what the backup plan is vs. just being frustrated because you don’t know what the backup plan is. Shame on Brad for not sharing these details with us!
It’s not that. I trust the perception from those with closer ties in the program. There’s frustration because they know the realistic backup plan isn’t a good one at the moment. That could change but Underwood is gambling with such a crucial position.

I’m not calling for anyone’s head … I simply state the facts … This team as it sits is not 2nd weekend good … You just missed on the guy we had all our chips on and the backup plans are not better than anything we’ve got right now …

I evaluate based on performance … Brad brought us back … There’s no doubt about it … But for how much he’s getting paid … The results aren’t living up to it … Period …

Do you think Josh is super thrilled ? I mean let’s be real … Brad had a lot riding on getting RayJ … The seat is warm and that’s coming from Josh …
Yes, I think Josh is super-thrilled. Why wouldn't he be? This team is already better than last year and we will definitely have a better point guard than last year. The "second weekend" depends on many factors that we have no idea about now.

Watch what happens with Antonio Reeves at Kentucky

If we're going to do that, shouldn't TSJ just play point? Seems they're similar players - scoring guard with size (TSJ a bit taller). Reeves' assist numbers across his career doesn't indicate to me that he would be ideal for the role.

The second RayJ took another visit … I’m calling Caleb Love …

But that’s just how I would handle it …

I get passing on Cone and Sallis because waiting on RayJ makes sense when those guys committed early but when Love opened back up … We should have pursued …

Do you think TJS and Hawk would have come back if Caleb Love would have committed? I mean there's wanting to play with an experienced point guard and there's also never seeing the ball without crashing the offensive glass.
