Probably easier to say in hindsight but given a choice between Mulcahy and RayJ, I think Mulcahy is actually a better fit for our roster.
I will stipulate that RayJ is the more talented player in a vacuum. But he’s not overly big or long, not overly quick or explosive. Also would probably look to be a top 2-3 scoring option. I don’t know how well he will be able to get his own shots or defend at the P5 level. Of course a sample size of only one game, but he went 5-19 against a Michigan team that did have length and athleticism but I wouldn’t say was overly locked in on the defensive end. Great playmaker though.
Terrance will probably average close to 20PPG. Coleman will probably look to be more assertive offensively based on NBA feedback. Domask and Quincy are both capable offensive players. Dain needs and deserves touches. Luke needs shots. We don’t need a star/alpha at the PG. We need someone who can operate within ball screens, make the correct reads and set up teammates, and ideally play good defense and be able to knock down enough open shots to keep defenses honest. Mulcahy fits that to a T. And although annoying to play against I think he would fit in great with Ty, Sencire, and Jeremiah.
If I was picking first in a pickup game I probably grab RayJ. But for this roster I think Mulcahy type player is a perfect fit. It’s not always about landing the splashiest names but finding the right missing pieces. Hope we get Mulcahy or someone like him.
