It is, but so was the lack of regulation that has gotten us to this point. There’s a difference between ignorance and malice and that’s where it becomes a problem. Stop normalizing and allowing hate and encourage education and don’t allow people to hide behind internet anonymity. We all have political differences but we should hold people who can influence others to a higher standard.
As long as the internet exists there will always be bad/hateful/illegal things on it. That's just the world we live in. It wouldn't matter if the internet was heavily regulated. It's the same thing out in the real world. Laws against murder and stealing doesn't rid society of those crimes. It would be harder for "hateful" things etc on the Internet to exist if it was heavily regulated, sure, but they would still move to darker corners of the internet where it is harder to track. I think it is better to have more speech than less speech in order to have a healthy society/Internet, and the "good" speech would drown out the "bad" speech anyway.

History tells us who the dangerous people are. (it's not those who like women in bikinis).

But I digress....does Illinois have a point guard yet?

Everypne wants to be the victim today . . . . The entire meaning behind the 1st Amendment is that we should have the freedom to speak our opinion without fear . . . It might not be popular and it might offend some, but you are free to speak it.
Well, that's only as it relates to fear from the government. I think both Dan's rules and bans have demonstrated otherwise.

There are problems with your argument. Words that are offensive to one person are almost always going to be offensive to a larger group, and due to inequality that group may not have the opportunity or freedom to speak up and defend themselves, nor should they just have to walk away from an offensive person in the way you speak.

The “greatest challenge facing our nation” isn’t offending one person, it’s that people feel entitled to spew hate and expect to hide behind the 1st Amendment. The framers of the Constitution had no way to anticipate current technology so there’s no way they could have anticipated that it would be possible for one person to say hateful and offensive things on platforms that would reach millions.

This is my unpopular opinion, but the 1st Amendment should be repealed and revised to account for the internet and social media. It should be illegal to post or display offensive or untrue statements in public or on the internet. Anything even resembling support for hate groups should be banned from public unless it’s in a museum and contextualized. Allowing this to go on as long as it has is no different than letting someone yell fire in public or make bomb threats, only its been going on for the last 150 years.

All you have to do is look at the incredibly offensive statements in the last week made by a washed up TV star calling for the genocide of 6 million Jews. The system is broken. Fix it.
Ummmm…….

My favorite are the posters telling @LadyLoyalty to keep scrolling and stop complaining, but are also the ones complaining about people posting basketball opinions that differ from their own. @Illini in Italy saying he served for the 1st amendment when all he’s done is brag about silencing people is hilarious.
Well said. I had to silence him myself, which was very difficult for uno paisano.

If it offends you, scroll past. You can even hit the ignore button if a certain poster continually offends you.

It offends me that you would propose to edit what others can see. One of the greatest challenges facing our nation today is the position that if something offends one person, it should be removed. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, even if it is offensive. Private boards like Loyalty are moderated as a private entity, not typically subject to the Constitution within certain limits (and Dan is certainly forward leaning on moderatinh Loyalty). But I think Dan has done a good job of balancing free speech and maintaining decorum. If he's not objected to Pru's posts up to now, I would take that as a de facto approval of the post if it survives the first day.

I understand the concept that something might might be considered offensive and make some people uncomfortable. If it offends someone, that person can walk away freely without fault nor I'll will from the other members here.
This is not at all what the 1st Amendment guarantees. It guarantees that the government cannot restrict your right to speak your mind (or assemble or practice religion, etc.). It does not prevent private organizations from restricting speech on their premises or services and it does not give the right to say what you want free of consequences. It's just not the government doling out those consequences.

I don't understand why you are trying to regulate what everyone else sees, approves, or disapproves of on this forum.

Every user has the ability to ignore any poster that they chose to, for whatever reason that they choose. Why do you choose to continue to view these posts that you deem offending, or personally violating, or whatever, and not click the ignore button?

These posts are clearly not outside of the realm of what liberalism, and tolerance would/should accept (or ignore), in my opinion.
On the other hand, everyone here has the entire internet at their disposal, so just because you or I enjoy something doesn't necessarily mean we have to enjoy it here if it's off-putting to a chunk of the fan base.

This isn't a free speech issue. It's a common courtesy issue.

I am on the Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread for just that. I have skipped over pages of non-related issues(very common on the bball thread lately). I respect that everyone has the right to their own opinion. My only opinion is there is a general chat thread in this forum where other issues can be addressed that aren't sports related.

Thank you. I was hoping someone would post this. I was going to, but quite frankly, I'm too tired and weary from taking this same stance for far too long. I greatly appreciate your relief.

I mean, it's the off-season... conversation wanders.

Does anyone else find it truly hilarious that not long after someone posted a logo chart of colleges worst fans and their rival (too lazy to look it up to attach, but you all remeber the one, the one with IL vs.IL), that the last some odd pages pretty much confirms it?
