Honestly haven’t tried to keep up on all the threads the last few weeks. Were there any transfer pg’s after the overseas trips that came available? Anyone we looked at?
Without having any information, I'll go ahead and say no

Joking aside, it’s been awhile since we had some legit talent from true Southern Illinois. I don’t even count Meyers since Robinson is a clip north of the STL line. Having lived down in Mt. Vernon many years ago, I have wondered when the next star would come out of those parts that would dawn the beloved uniform. STL area aside, have I missed someone since Bardo?
Just my opinion, but I think we could count Meyers in this discussion since Robinson is about 30 miles south of I-70.

Absolutely no good excuse to not get Gill.

I know people play up legacy adds, but winning battles when you have a recruiter that lives with the kid is a must.
Having a great recruiting class, Gill or not, is the must.

I'd love to see him. Between his four years in champaign and post college career it's hard to find a better illini.

But the kid is going to do what he does. There are plenty of times that the kid just doesn't want to follow his dad. This could be one.

what if he's not good enough? if staff decides a kid is probably going to have a tough time getting tick, the smart move is to pass. all the more so, when it's the son of an Illini great.

I have no idea if Gill passes the "good enough" bar. I certainly hope so. But there's a huge difference between being a prep stud and breaking into a top BIG team's rotation.

It would be a helluva lot easier to get a read on Gill if he played for a good AAU squad. Totally get why pops is reticent.

Bottom line: let's not pretend that there aren't any iceberg scenarios here
IMO, you take him if he wants to come here. Kendall has been nothing but great to the program and even if the kid is borderline, you take him. That is how culture is built. Again, my opinion, but I just don't see them passing on him.

I don't understand the culture comment. The idea of taking a borderline/less talented kid because of family ties is the opposite of a good culture move in my mind.

If he's good enough to compete for playing time then we should take him, if he's not then you don't. We already have enough nepotism in the program.

You take the borderline kid of a very prominent former Illini player.....if he wants to come....you take him...never know, he may improve and become a key figure in helping the Illini to championships.....the benefits could help recruiting not just in the Chicago area but beyond

The ideal that you take a player that's not good enough to buy goodwill for another, to be named later player is exactly what got Weber fired.

I trust the staff on this stuff, they have shown themselves to be great relationship builders. But also, from what I've seen/heard Gill is good enough to compete.

And this is why coaches will always have detractors. We can't even agree if taking the offspring of a program legend, who also happens to be the #1 rated player in our flagship state, would be a good culture fit.

agree. if he wants in, he gets in. but I would expect a full heart to heart, cards on the table discussion beforehand. there are no guarantees, legacy or not. competition is going to be stiff and PT is earned. if he wants in, gotta assume he gets it and is gonna bust rear.

one thing I'm not worried about here is that KG is going to be a big headache. he may have occasional conversations with Brad, but I don't see him interfering, more of a laissez-faire approach.

Not to mention this:
Assault and Strangulation? Yikes!

If Undywood is looking to improve this program's culture (and I hope he is), this wouldn't be the way to do that.
"Undywood"?????

My issue is more with the idea of a kid deserving a spot b/c of his dad. I had replied something similar right after that I think Gill will be good enough.

I agree. When Kendall arrived he was the lowest rated in his incoming class. I recall Jeff Finke saying this on WDWS a few years back. He was a part of that team to before switching to football. Kendall said his son is better than he was at his sons age. Whether thats true or not I can't say. He is his dad!

I agree...if he's good enough and it sounds like he is...then there's nothing wrong with taking him with the understanding that PT is earned not guaranteed....I would think KG and PG would understand and be just fine with that

Just saw that 2025 top 100 guard Bryce Heard is returning to Illinois from Montverde to play. He will be attending my alma mater — Homewood-Flossmoor. 24/7 has Illinois as his first offer back in 2021. We have much interest in the kid? Does getting him back in state help?

what....

what about Jordan's kid?
Players like Lieb? BBV? etc etc.

Of course you take PG and playing time is earned.

MJ's kid wasn't on scholly. Huge difference.

Lieb was taken as a 13th or 12th man. Do you the Gill would be happy in that role?
Nobody wants to be 12 or 13th man or would be happy with that role but also it isn't a permanent assignment - players can change their role / position on the team by outworking other players. I have no idea how good Phoenix Gill is but wouldn't blink an eye at offering him a ride and having the conversation that minutes are earned. Based on earlier post about being number 1 player in the state indicates he deserves a look even if his last name isn't Gill.
