Any chance Nico carves out a role? Sounds like he may be the best “pure pg” on the team. And we’ve got enough positional size at other positions I’m wondering if we can hide him a bit on defense.
No chance

About 4 or 5 years ago, we were discussing this same issue. It was after the season in which we had the most losses in history and Obelix was complaining that BU had not shown he could recruit. He had only got Ayo, and that is only because he hired Chin and Ayo was part of the deal. Then about a week later BU signed Kofi and by the next year Obelix (whose posts I generally enjoyed) was no longer posting, at least under that moniker. Don't underestimate BU. Things don't always work out, but unlike with John Groce and Weber to an extent, BU has a lot of contingency plans cooking all the time. If you underestimate him too loudly you might be back here in a year or two posting under a different name.

I certainly don't mind eating crow and would love to be wrong about my concerns.

More on stars and rankings

Article is a little dated from 2016, but I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers are still similar.

About 2/3 of 5 stars get drafted (Rivals had Ayo as 5 star, Kofi as 4)
About 1 in 7 for 4 stars
About 1 in 15 for 3 stars inside top-150 (not sure how many of these there are each year since 4 stars usually go pretty deep in the top 100)
About 1 in 60 for remaining 3 stars
and less than 1 in 200 outside 3 stars.

He's the 3rd string pt guard, won't get any significant time unless Ty or DGL get injured. Still a valuable emergency piece, but his role isn't complicated.

Sounds like Chin leaving really was addition through subtraction, creating room for assistants who are better at closing.

It seems to me that Illinois really has suffered from from some "less than stellar" assistant coaches over the last 20 years when it comes to recruiting. Chester and TA excluded. Jerrance Howard and Tracey Webster turned out to be awful. Weber didn't seem to much care for the recruiting side of college basketball, which left us massively behind in talent procurement.
I thought Jerrance Howard was generally regarded as very good recruiter which is why he stuck at Kansas for so long.

From what I had heard and remember, it wasn't that he COULDN'T recruit, it was that his loyalty was to himself, his brand, feathering his nest, and /or his habits as opposed to having a loyalty to the University of Illinois. His "talents" were better suited for programs such as KU where there were less questions asked.......

I won’t get into specific details … But TJ originally committed to DePaul and to a Meanstreets guys in TA when we supposedly had MIFs guy on staff … That meant we get Ayo, TJ, THT, and Whitney … Chin went 1/4 … It was embarrassing when we lost TJ to freaking DePaul … Brad was livid …

As for THT … He wanted to come … Brad wanted him to come … He committed on his visit … It was a done deal … He was coming … Was gonna wear 25 … The whole deal … The summer “issues” were solved … Until someone said something they should not have in front of someone who was not supposed to know … And everything fell apart …

Whitney went to UK … So like Brad somewhat understood it and he obviously got terrible advice and didn’t pan out … But again … The deal was we got him too … And we didn’t …

And don’t even get me started on Michael Foster and how Chin screwed that one up as well …
I still have the article saved on how THT was committing to Illinois. Just ridiculous.

I mentioned the summer “issues” … THT left for Team Rose … The issues were resolved before the HS season … Ayo would’ve played with THT …

I won’t get into specifically what happened … Chin opened his mouth to the wrong people about things he should’ve been quiet about and therefore caused a whole other i$$ue … That’s really all I can say …
Seems clear enough.

I don’t put a lot of stock in rankings. But I do put stock in high major offers. And the fact that a bunch of high majors saw Butler a lot more than we did, but didn’t offer, is concerning to me. We’ll see.
I am curious how you know a bunch of high majors saw Butler a lot more than we did?

That's been a common perception, and I think justifiably so. I dont' blame BU for taking a chance on the roster he put together --on paper that team looked like a good bet. And early, they proved they were a good bet...and then things fell apart. FWIW, I don't expect a repeat of that fade --I think BU puts a premium on character/culture and last year's issues were something he won't soon forget.
-Skyy was overrated so he lost his starting position then bailed. I doubt he does any better at Louisville. Maybe it was the knee injuries but he just was not that athletic and was average shooter/ball handler.
-Mathew Mayers was a terrible defender and volume shooter who never passed. Talented but definite me first player.
-RJ forgot how to shoot. No idea what happened but we badly needed his offense.
-Goode injury robbed us of our best outside shooter and probably best glue guy.
+TSJ was as advertised. Good scorer. Good shooter when wide open. Unfortunately limited ability to create his own jump shot. Excelled at driving the lane to get fouled.
++++Dain / Jayden / Ty / Sencire were all good freshman contributors.

The problem was really we only return 1 role player starter - Coleman and two freshman Goode/RJ who played limited minutes and Lieb (zero minutes). 20/20 hind sight at least we made the big dance had a few big wins.

this year we have
+++3 starters back Coleman TSJ Dain
++plus two freshman who played serious minutes Sencire and Ty plus Goode. so 6 players back.
???We are adding 3 SR transfers - Quincy, Marcus, Justin and
++2 freshman Amani and DGL

I am confident Brad learned from last year and will watch culture/chemistry very closely to nip problems in the bud

Nice, article, but it doesn't answer my question. How does the previous poster know a bunch of high majors saw Butler a lot more than us?

Not just some, a bunch. Not just more, a lot more. So a whole bunch of high majors invested a whole lot of time evaluating Butler, and said meh? Then Chester barely caught a glimpse, and say, hey, kid's a take?

Seems possible, but not plausible.

Yeah it wasn't really to "answer" your question, but clearly there were others sniffing around. How many is pointless to worry or wonder about.

The article says "a few other high majors."

I gather there were not other high majors that saw Butler more than us. Definitely not a bunch that saw him a lot more.

I guess this is why you lean on recruit rankings. They are often based on a consensus of opinions that have had multiple eyes on him on multiple occasions. I sometimes shudder when I hear "the staff went to see him and absolutely fell in love". It's very easy in sports to have a lights out game or to have a streak where you look like the next coming of Jordan and then crash back down to baseline. Anyone whose played any sports can attest to that.

Yes I know...that's why I said "how many is pointless to worry and wonder about".

I simply posted the article to show there were others...not to refute your point or "answer" your question.
