Just another version of the MJ vs Kobe vs. Lebron debate. Silly because you can't compare across generations.

Yes the absolute measurables are better today for all the reasons stated here. That is not the point. Sedino said as much:

I can't transport today's athletes back in time, therefore what I care about is a player's relative athleticism vs his peers. Those players back in 1989 and 2005 were demonstrably better at basketball and dominated other players and teams. There was a wider gulf between them and other players.

Maybe that is not the 'pure physical specimen' argument that Sedino puts forth, but it's my eye test.

Agree, Pru. What bothers me most though about this “conversation” is the absolutism. I dislike it intensely when a person tells another he or she is just “wrong” because they don’t share the same opinion. No chance at a “well, maybe you have a point” or any kind of compromise. Just “I’m right, and you’re wrong.” Also, methinks a few of those arguing are too young to have ever seen some of the best players in Illinois history compete in person as we old farts did. Much of these special players’ greatness is lost by just watching them play in videos. I attended the game on Friday night in the front row behind the scorer’s table so I was able to witness Shannon’s athleticism close up. He is absolutely fantastic and is a very special player. I hope he’s an All-American so he gets his banner hung in the rafters like those other spectacular Illini.

Your first point proves the entire point I’ve been making lmao. Problem is they didn’t have those things, and were not able to take their athletic gifts to the same lengths as modern athletes, and were therefore less athletic at their peak.

Yes, they absolutely did train to jump higher, run faster and move quicker. Just not as well, see point above.

Combine numbers don’t make the athlete, but every highlight you’ve given from every single player i have seen TSJ do. As for my athleticism? I played JuCo baseball for 2 years, as a 5’10 white kid I’d say that ain’t half bad.
Yes, but what were your numbers? What was your max throwing velocity from the mound, max throwing velocity from the field, average spin rate, max spin rate, average launch angle, average exit velocity, max exit velocity, longest maximum distance, barrel rate, hard hit ball rate, 60 time, defensive range factor, defensive efficiency ratio, ultimate zone rating, and isolated power? And how do your numbers compare to the average 5'10" white kid from Parkland College?

Can you share a video of TSJ's best dunk? You've mentioned a few times that you've seen him do everything that past Illinois players have done (360s, reverses, double pumps, put backs, posterizing taller players ) however, I've seen every play he's made in an Illini uniform and I can't recall any of that.

Sedino

Every single stat you can think of shows that kids going into the NBA and playing in college today are significantly faster, quicker, stronger, and can jump higher than kids even 10-15 years ago and DEFINITELY more than kids 20-30 years ago. That is the objective truth. Don’t believe me, google is free.

Now you've changed things up. How about Shaq? Someone stronger? Who? Shawn Kemp? Jump higher? Mugsy Bogues 5'3 or 5 and won a Slam Dunk comp. LeBron 21 years in the league. There are many more. I believe that fits your criteria.

Now if you want to say taller with more ability or fame. I'll give that one like Giannis. Jokic, Tatum, Embiid.
Muggsy Bogues never won a dunk contest. 5’7 Spud Webb did.

I just wasted several pages in search of recruiting information but instead wasted time trying to decide whose dad would win a fight. Problem was there wer

"Relative to who they were playing at the time." ..... Hmmmmm. I'd say that the superstar athletes of yore were an equal measure better than the average player, as the superstar athletes today are better than the current average player...... Had the former athletes has access to the same nutrition, health care, and training facilities as today's athletes they'd be just as good IMO.

I thought these tangents were reserved for the doldrums of the offseason??

Maybe time for Dan to hit the, "new thread, who dis" button.

Butler strikes me as more of a scoring "1" combo guard than DGL, who appears to be much more a "2" who has decent handles and is an OK passer. But, I see where you were going.
Economy sized Nowell would be nice.
