I just want us to be absurdly tall with tremendous skill levels and a couple guys with elite athleticism again.
Is that too much to ask?

I'm not sure why you need insiders to verify when the article has direct quotes from Tyler.
Reminder that Buck shot a better % from 3 than Epps did last year. Let's not pretend he's starting from nowhere. He shot 20% ft and literally had no offensive game. So I would hope he’s improved from that. Also if his game improved so much he would he playing right now and not redshirting
Epps is the comparison for your argument?Reminder that Buck shot a better % from 3 than Epps did last year. Let's not pretend he's starting from nowhere.
My apologiesThe Athletic article says that Brad and Tyler had already been experimenting with Domask backing down his man, but Wright suggested he lean into it even more and commit to it.
Wright posted up his guards all the time so Tyler started studying Wright's Villanova teams.

Im just saying that he has spent all last summer and this whole year working on his game and body. Write him off if you will offensively, im not gonna do that. I think he can and will show big improvements. I-L-LHe shot 20% ft and literally had no offensive game. So I would hope he’s improved from that. Also if his game improved so much he would he playing right now and not redshirting
Can Ty do it? Sure but is he someone we want to be the key to inicaite our offense? I dont think so. He is a below average shooter from the line and taking any shots besides lay ups or short jump hooks. Its good to have that option vs lopsided match ups but we need that as an option like Ty is now not in the role like Domask. Ty's shooting is far too limited. If you can't envision Ty doing MD's Booty Ball, you need to clear your mind and think happier thoughts.
How does Indiana just swoop in and get a 5 star every freaking cycle. Horrible coach, horrible team, and horrible pants yet they still get the top ranked dudes every single year when we’ve yet to ever land 1! Eric Gordon will always make me hate them
Okay, how's this:Epps is the comparison for your argument?

I think you can both not write him off at improving while also acknowledging that the expectation should not be that he becomes TSJ. I think what most posters are saying is we’re probably in trouble if the success of next years team hinges on Buck making TSJ/Ayo improvements.Okay, how's this:
Player A: 9-35 (25.7%) from 3 as a freshman
Player B: 13-41 (31.7) from 3 as a freshman
Player A: TSJ
Player B: Buck
There's literally no reason to give the kid no hope for improving his shot. It just takes work, which he took a whole season off to put in the time.
His FT shooting improved from awful to below average. He has yet to ever attempt a 3 pt shot and really any shot outside 10 feet. I think he can get better but all this talk about him ever being a shooter is based on what? He hasn't even taken a shot and there is a reason for that don't you think? I dont expect him to start shoot mid range and three pointers maybe you guys do. I just don't know why when he hasnt even attempted one.Currently.......

To me, a good realistic comparison on improvement on the shooting would be D’monte. He made himself into a respectable shooter when open. If Buck can make that they have to acknowledge the shot, it can open up a lot more of his game and space the floor. You see this year how great the offense can be when we typically play at most 1 non-shooter and that non-shooter (Dain/Ty) have very defined roles for that part of the offense.

In response to the comments regarding next years team, how is Coleman Hawkins not even mentioned? He is extremely likely to go undrafted. Illinois can easily match what he would make elsewhere. He would be very valuable to Illinois next year. I’d say Hawkins being back next year is more likely than not.
And for those saying he is a first rounder. He is not. But he could come back and be one of the most valuable players in college basketball and improve his game and attempt to become a first rounder like TSJ did this year.
If he keeps that great attitude and continues to work hard, I think he'll have a shot.DGL is going to be a starter next year and one of our best scorers
I think Hansberry can very effective next year. If he stays, he's going to work his tail off and be a pleasant surprise. You havent liked any of my Hansberry hype posts and I'm getting worried!
Buck wasn't a good shooter but he wasn't Ty. He had an alright shooting form to work with.Epps is the comparison for your argument?
Considering his baseline 3% doesn’t suck, taking an entire year off to improve his game while also having turned in some of the best, game altering defensive performances I’ve ever seen from a freshman, I’m not sure why so many are so quick to discount him. I sure wish he was suiting up today…No posters are saying Harris is gonna make Ayo/White improvements. Zero.
One poster stated that Harris (at 21) is pretty much done with significant improvement.
But go ahead and run with it
I also seem to remember him getting to the rim a decent amount. Now he didnt finish well as a freshman but the scorer’s mentality was there. If he shot 32% from 3 as an unpolished freshman, if he could up that to just 36%, you wouldn’t be able to keep him off the court w his elite defense.Buck wasn't a good shooter but he wasn't Ty. He had an alright shooting form to work with.
I want to see Ty and an indefensible floater. Similar to what Mark Jackson used to do with the Pacers. It was either a floater or a lob to Dale Davis or Antonio Davis. At 6'6 and those crazy long arms, no one is getting it. But wait there's more, his post moves are still elite, just needs to finish. If you can't envision Ty doing MD's Booty Ball, you need to clear your mind and think happier thoughts.
Great. Who do we want?Post in thread 'Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread'
