I think our athleticism is fine. I think our physicality, effort, and focus are lacking.
Hard disagreement here. Which player on our roster would have matched up athletically in ANY of the games this weekend. We had crafty guys, but really no gifted athletes. Those closest thing we have to that is Ty.

We need a substantial bump of players who can really get up and down the floor and leave their feet. We don't have one "wow" guy on this roster and it showed, a lot, against the better teams.

I’d like to see someone put together some smart-stats on the churn/turnover rates all over college basketball…

We presently are struggling with retention…BUT obviously it’s bad all over. It would be nice to see what we could glean from the #s all across college hoops. A little knowledge might illuminate things a bit…and settle a couple of arguments?? (Nah, who am I kidding?)

Anyways, you (also Fighter of the Nightman) seem like the right folks for the job. Do you accept the challenge?

I would do it myself but I’m: a lazy Humanities guy and a lousy beancounter.
(like really bad at math.)
Ha this sounds like some good Monday morning procrastination fuel. Will report back tomorrow.

What you're saying is that the recruit/transfer needs to be self aware of their own limitations and expectations and the staff needs to be clear on what those expectations are.

Seems like the players expectations and the coaches expectations aren't always lining up.

This shouldn't have been news to Brad that Morez wanted to extend his game and it shouldn't have been news to Morez that, for his freshman year, he had a role to play.

Honestly, the only guy who really embraces the role that he probably didn't want(at first) was Will. He followed Brad's plan, he eased himself in and low and behold.....he developed after putting the time in and he ended up being the go-to guy.

I think that Morez(or his parents) wanted more of an immediate gratification.

I think that going forward, the staff needs to look FAR MORE into how a player fits and have that very open dialogue. If Sarr wants 20 shots a game, Brad needs to manage that with the rest of his roster. You can't recruit 5 guys who all want to get 20 shots and average 20 PPG.

The parents need to be part of these conversations as well. KJ, Will, TI, MJ and TW...... individually are great players. There just wasn't enough ball to go around and that's not even taking the rest of the roster into consideration.

The team was a bit selfish and we're seeing that unfold this off-season.
1. The kid left because he got an offer for substantially more money. 2. I still think Tim Anderson is going to be involved somehow. 3. The comments about 3-point shooting opportunities, etc were of tertiary importance. People don't like to say it's about the money when it is.

Correct. You cannot sustain a positive culture in the long run this way.
If I have to choose between a team that is moderately successful and retains players from year to year or a team that has NBA players and erratic seasons with a possible deep run but only retains two players year over year, I’m taking moderate success with consistency every single time.

None of whom have experience in our system or with other players on our team, meaning we have to start building an actual team from scratch.
I am okay with the odds of a new cast of characters gelling. Watching these other tournament teams, I really don’t think this collection of players had much hope to ever reach that level unless KJ and Riley both decided to stay.

When was the last time this team was moderately successful with consistently retained players that stay for 3+ years? Better yet, how many coaches can pull this off in this climate? It’s a small handful.

Due to a busy calendar this past week, I missed the previous Recruiting Thread. I certainly hope we did not seriously lose any of our insider brethren.

The quote I heard going around re: Morez and his dad was "my son doesn't come off the bench". So that does indeed sound like starting HumBrickHouse over him was an issue from the jump.
Was it Ben that was starting over him or was it Tre? I thought Tre filled the role of a 4 more than Ben did.

Is there any disagreement that’s not hard? Lol

Probably should not be allowed to DM anyone on here without the recipients permission. That way the only people able to DM someone is because they know them and they are ok with it. Not sure if that could be done or not.

You are dead wrong about not needing athletic players. Probably the best athlete on the team was Tre and he couldn't keep up with the teams outside of the big ten
I agree. We weren't that athletic outside of Tre, DGL, and Johnson. However, the best run-jump athlete on the team had to be DGL.

We were a tall team, but that doesn't mean much if the other team is running past you.

IMO, Morez not athletic and Tre is average for a college wing.

Ayo Dosunum, three three years. Kofi Coburn, three three years. Trent Frazier (and his fab sidekick, Damonte Williams), three years. Coleman Hawkins, three years.

I must have misread the origianl post.

Morez is a very athletic four-man. Tre is a pretty athletic wing. Athleticism in this program would be significantly improved if we had a way to retain these kinds of athletes.

And that’s the problem. I am disenfranchised with the product as it is today. I watched less than half of the Illini games this season because I just didn’t care about all these new kids. And it’s not going to get better next year….or the year after that.

I know that nobody cares, but I just don’t enjoy a college basketball product that just shuffles the deck every season. I am probably in the minority and the money will still flow without me. It just bums me out.
