This year will be a good litmus test for Scheyer’s coaching chops. If he hasn’t had a transcendent level prospect like Flagg/Knueppel or Boozer, he’s merely been okay, finishing top 3-4 in a really watered down ACC.
I haven’t followed high school recruiting too closely but my understanding is this years class is substantially weaker than last year’s class. And the fact that Duke went out and got Blackwell seems to suggest they don’t think they have a Cooper Flagg in their incoming frosh.
If he turns this team into a super team I will be on notice, until then I’m skeptical.

I think what Scheyer will struggle to replicate, for a variety of reasons, is the iconic all-timer nature of Coach K's 91-92 and 2001 teams. I don't know if the sport mints legends that way anymore.
He's doing an unusually good job at the impossible college sports task of replacing a legend though, I'll say that. They will be right in the mix again next year.
We should push for a home-and-home with them, I bet Scheyer would be into it, and we've had some great battles over the years in the dearly departed B1G-ACC Challenge.

No comparison. I hate Duke but have to admit coach K is one of the best coaches ever. He built that program and system from the ground up and turned Duke into a machine that you could never count out of the national championship. Scheyer was just handed the keys and given the instructions on how to maintain this well oiled machine. All he has to do is keep it running. Biggest challenge for him has been keeping the top players coming there which he has done. Also an after affect from coach K and the reputation he built at Duke.
We are undefeated at their place. No need to ruin a good thing. Home and homes seem to be fading away anyway. Just don't send us back to MSG.

In regard to the ACC they have won both the regular season and Conference Tournaments in back to back years. So while the ACC is a middling power 5 conference, they have taken care of business there.
The draft picks are great, but most of them were "one and done". We are seeing more and more that experience matters in March. Teams built around freshman Alphas are not getting it done.
The last team to win a National Championship whose best player was a freshman was Duke in 2015.
I assume that's a big reason why they prioritized Blackwell. Having the most NBA talent doesn't win championships. Having the best college basketball players does.

However, Duke usually has some kids that stick around. Without doing research I’d argue they usually have some vets on the team each year.

That's kind of like saying Gonzaga has taken care of business. They have, but it's not the same accomplishment it was when the ACC was THE basketball conference.
No one made him focus on highschoolers, particularly in an era where they were 18 year olds going against 24 year olds. He could see the data and it's pretty obvious that he has a blank checkbook with his first choice of players regardless of entry type. He had Coward committed last year until he declared. So there's some pivot, but Blackwell is not as good as Coward and the team definitely has less star power in 26.
Scheyer has been outcoached by Hurley and Sampson, so it's not like he's getting clowned or a failure, I just think given the resource that seat starts to get hot if we're not talking about Duke in the championship game this time next year.

I won't speculate on how hot his seat might be at the current rate (meaning usually top 3 in final KenPom but losing in the E8 or F4) since seat hotness can be driven by the mob, and NCAAT results matter more than I think is fair. Though maybe if his teams keep blowing leads in spectacular fashion in the NCAAT a hot seat would be more reasonable.
But it isn't as though anyone could be handed the keys and do as well as he has. Spanning the time since he took over, they're #2 in Torvik compared to #14 KU, #19 UCLA, #21 UK, #22 UNC, #41 Indiana. Looking just at NCAAT games over that span, they're #5 compared to #1 UConn, #15 UCLA, #26 UNC, #42 UK, #43 KU, #59 Indiana.
Unless they can get Hurley himself (or there's some regression), I think it would be playing with fire to make his seat hot.
