Jordan Goodwin commits to SLU

I am not trashing the school, I just don't know anything it is noted for and certainly does not compare even close to UI, I don't think academics had anything to do with his decision.

I am still glad we got Tilmon !!! Disappointed that JG choose SLU, but we still have some great options. I think we need another big and point guard. (Scruggs and Wilkes) Good dream huh..

Congrats to him. Heard lots of things on this one and unfortunately seems too be correct. Hope the kid does well.

SLU fan here and I promise I come in peace...

Sounds like Ford went full-court press on Goodwin over the last month and then getting Corey Tate as an assistant was massive. Ford also told Goodwin he could play PG at SLU and that Goodwin reminded Ford of Marcus Smart. He told Goodwin that being a PG was his route to the NBA. That apparently sat EXTREMELY well with Goodwin as no other coach had brought that up.

That said, I've seen Goodwin play more than a dozen times and I don't think he's PG material. Definitely a better chance in the A10 than the Big 10, but I still don't see it. But again, that's how recruiting works. You tell a guy what he wants to hear and you deal with the potential problem once they get there. It sucks, but everyone does it.

I'm a big time Illini fan and always will be. SLU has been and always will be my first team but I was excited to see Jordan deciding between my two programs. Yes, I know I should just pick one team but I just can't. Jordan would have done well at Illinois. I think he'll be a star at SLU. You guys have a stacked recruiting class as it is. It'll be fun to see his career play out. Hopefully we meet in the NCAA's soon.

The comparison to Marcus Smart is not a bad one. I actually made the same comparison before Ford/SLU came into play. So there is nothing wrong with Ford telling Goodwin that he could become the next Marcus Smart, or that his pro future depends on being able to play PG. That much is true.

I had watched Marcus Smart in HS and he was not a true PG either, although a better player with more advanced combo skills than Goodwin. Goodwin is a SG/SF who has played more PF than PG in HS. So it remains to be seen whether he can make that transition in college (I personally have doubts based on his HS career so far). But he is indeed a very tough, mentally and physically strong player, who we would have loved to get.

No way were we behind NW. That's just JGood thowing it back in our faces, probably due to a lot of negative UI fan reactions over the past few days. Oh well.

Could have been a legend on a great team in a premier conference.
Instead he'll be a really good player on a mediocre team in a crap conference (albeit with nicer things in his apartment)

In that article Goodwin says "I like having him in my corner, especially seeing how he develops players.” talking about Ford.

I am rolling my eyes so hard right now.

Still find it amazing how the top IL High school players continue to choose other schools. Guess the last 5 or 10 years of losing will have that affect. But still, players just continue to look elsewhere. The thought of being a legacy at Illinois is just not that big a deal with IL recruits anymore. I'm pretty much cool with rooting for players from other states that commit here. Not sure just how out of it we are with the recruitment of Scruggs, but he'd be a fantastic get and would make us forget about JG.

And how we know why Groce is bald. Hopefully all those AAU games weren't for not and Finke is still interested.

just looking out for his family. Sad, really.

Looking out for your family in a crooked, broken system designed to abuse you and steal your labor is hardly "sad". What's sad is that the interests of Goodwin and his family didn't intersect with the maximum potential on-court success and exposure for him as a college basketball player. Life doesn't always work out that way.

I more meant the sad part is the way this turned so quick on the coaches. Recruiting is an ugly thing at times.

posting/implying that broken rules are the reason we lost a recruit the day he commits elsewhere sounds like such sour grapes on our part.. wish people would stop doing that unless your source is more credible than a guy who knows a guy

So I wonder if he will actually play PG at Saint Louis or if Ford is just telling him that to get him to commit.
1). If he plays point, will he most likely be playing out of (his best) position?
2). Did Ford just lie to him about playing point to get him to commit, and then deal with the consequences later?

"when Coach Tate got a job over there that changed a lot"

While it REALLY torques me off that the NCAA allows dishonest crap like this, and that recruits & family think they are entitled to fringe money, if others are playing this game then we are hurt if we do not as well.

Do not about other, but this is a blessing in disguise.

It opens another scholarship spot.

Frazier next weekend and then Scruggs.

If you can acknowledge that we are living, in the present day, in a glass house, I don't see what the problem is.

I guess the question really is why we couldn't pull off whatever SLU did. What did Tate know that we didn't?

Id be willing to bet most people insinuating these things have legitimate sources, whether they actually know someone in the know, or are just parroting things posted to premium sites

It would probably be different if the kid were a McDAA... Not worth the risk for a top 60 player at a position we are stacked at already
