Kofi Cockburn to miss first 3 games of season

Who knows. Enes Kanter got ruled permanently ineligible and never got to play for Kentucky because the Turkish club he played for gave him $33k in benefits, for food, travel, educational expenses, etc. while playing with the team. He actually turned down a $6 million deal with the same team because he wanted to play in the NCAA. So while we like to think the NCAA has it out for us and gives blue bloods a pass, I think the more accurate read is that the NCAA is arbitrary, inconsistent, and has no problem screwing over athletes in pursuit of its own inane and incomprehensible agenda.
But that was because his name was Enes

Jackson State (Nov. 9th)
Arkansas State (Nov. 12th)
at Marquette (Nov. 15th)

I don't know why Illinois couldn't fight it. The Illinois says that the NCAA can't make any rule preventing athletes from making money in NIL. So, if the NCAA is making the ruling now, it shouldn't be legal, especially when the NCAA is saying that it would now be permissible.

I really just don’t see the point of enforcing a rule that doesn’t even exist anymore. It’s like taking a cheap parting shot just to be vindictive.

Best guess: fighting it delays the start of the suspension, so if we lose the appeal, Kofi serves it in the middle of B1G season instead of a couple of cupcakes and a probably-not-good Marquette team.

If it were 10 games or something, there's more incentive to fight it.

The Illinois law on this makes it clear that the NCAA can't make any rules or punish an athlete for this. I would think a university lawyer could get an injunction for the season.

So they punish a student athlete who choose to return to play NCAA BBall for something that is now legal. While coaches and institutions break the rules which still exist with little or no punishment?????
I don't think it's legal for the players to sell their jerseys that they've been given by the university and used in a game. That is, until they leave. That was the issue with Kofi I believe.

I'm relieved it was this light. That said, I'm guessing that we'll get a a team wide four game suspension with a bad call in our round of 32 game.

If you reread the original post, it states that it would have been okay after July 1st, just days after he did it.

It might actually be a good thing in the long run. The big guy is a HUGE luxury. There could be some big games down the road in which he gets in foul trouble. It could be good to develop game plans that don't revolve around him.

NCAA doesn’t come into play in this or shouldn’t. Not an eligibility issue, just a University issue so probably a slap on the wrist.
Agreed. The last thing we need is for the NCAA to start litigating criminal acts. Not saying I endorse the behavior, but there are all kinds of issues with the NCAA getting involved with this kind of stuff, not the least of which includes social justice issues.

You do realize if it had been a KY player and he got suspended for 3 games that Illini fans would be saying, “if that was an Illinois player, he would have been suspended for 8 games.” 😁
Let's face it, that would be true. Hell we are still waiting on other "shoe" to drop on punishments from the investigations into the big wallet programs. But let's hit Illinois right away/

I doubt that. Brady Morningstar was out a semester for this last time one of their guys got it. Self in the past has been tough on this.

An appeal to the NCAA could hurt the team. I'm saying they should go to court. The NCAA appears to be violating state law. A judge could grant an injunction and the NCAA would probably back off, since they aren't actually enforcing an actual rule. Either way, it wouldn't play out quickly.
