As a younger fan I do not remember the Zook hire well, could someone compare excitement level then to now for me?

To me, not even the same ballpark. We knew we were getting a great recruiter in Zook, but knew about lack of great coaching. In Lovie, I think we are anticipating in being in the living rooms if big time players, but now have a guy who can coach and prepare his guys. Lovie hasn't even signed and people seem to be signing up and inquiring on tickets. He brings instant credibility and an identity to Illinois Football which has been lacking forever.

+1 Not even the same universe. This is unprecedented (for us) and cataclysmic.

As I recall, people thought the Zook hire was sensible and somewhat clever (the idea being that we'd build a statue for Zook's record at Florida) though not necessarily exciting or game-changing.

100% agree

Spring Game's attendance has to have just jumped tremendously

1. I listened to ESPN radio and/or AM670 a lot when Boers and Bernstein was a morning show and Lovie Smith was the HC of the Bears. The media/coach relationship slowly evolved into one of disdain on both sides. The media, in efforts to compete with each other over headlines often times, would churn the proverbial muck concerning Bears coverage. Lovie found this to be mere garbage that affected his locker room and showed a real contempt for reporters towards the end. In turn, he was increasingly hammered by the media for both silly (his sideline demeanor/lack of enthusiasm) and legitimate (below average offenses/clock management) reasons. As a listener I took away the fact that what began as a growing lack of trust on both sides turned very personal in the last few years of his tenure. I would expect that Lovie would find C-U coverage reasonable even in the hard times. He will get much grief in Chicago, though.
2. I would take Lovie Smith because I believe it would help recruiting and that is what matters when trying to compete in the Big Ten. The man has a pedigree and gravitas which will drown naysayers in the press. He is wise enough to surround himself with competent coaches and he will run a clean program. Count me "all-in" with Lovie.

Love my Illini

You give too much credit to the Champaign press. They're not reasonable, they're soft. Chicago is a bit harsh, but not so much as Champaign is soft.

Agreed here, we were cautiously optimistic but it was thought of as a gamble - great recruiter but questionable coach.

I think some of this will temper after the intro presser when everyone's reminded why Lovie was hated by Chicago reporters. Gives nothing at the mic. Won't embarrass himself like some, but it's like NyQuill.

There has never been a big splash hire like this in the history of Illinois Athletics. A coach who led his team to the pinnacle of it's field in professional sports. And with Rex Grossman as your quarterback.

Closest to excitement and anticipation would have been Bill Self

Yes this would be night and day imo

I had to endure a 4-38 stretch when I spent by 4 years in Champaign so I am still jaded.

Try being an 'old' Illinois graduate and fan who has watched/suffered through less than mediocre for years . . . the last day has been like a fog has been lifted. I've never posted on this board . . ever . . but I signed up just to say this. . . Finally we have an AD that is thinking with an orange and blue heart . . the same one that we graduates have for this university! Graduated in 1979 and damn proud of it.

The only thing I want Lovie to say when he walks up to the mic is....

"Well, we won again."
Thank you for your time."
See you next week."

Seems so quick.

Did they follow the steps requires by the State of Illinois? Adv for X number of days, etc? Considering he is a minority they probably skipped that requirement.

?????????

But, welcome LS. No pressure.

No idea. That seems like a good question Jeremy Werner will bring up at his press conference.

Moleface era? I know your pain.

The good ol' Turn-to-ook era for me.

But luckily I did get to experience the highest of highs with the NC game run which was fun season and and even more fun stretch of parties during the NCAA run which more than made up for it.

The presser will be seen through the lense of our record. If we win, people will love the presser and they'll see the calmness as a good trait. If we lose, it'll be torn apart.

I will agree with this. I liked Lovie in Chicago. Thought he was kind of a jerk in press conferences. But can live with it.

I don't think this applied with Beckman. Even if he had won. I was in pain every press conference. Thinking "what did we do"

Shannon is basically saying Whitman met with Lovie in a GMC Yukon on the runway at Tampa International Airport. Whitman landed at 10:28 and took off at 11:09. Shannon also reported that the search committee interviewed Kelly Mehrtens :tsk::tsk::tsk:

What are you saying happened in that 30 minutes? Pickup? or Dropoff? of Something else?

Edit: Not disagreeing with you, just curious if you know/can share more
