Don't care for the prying Asmussen interview. You know you're not getting anything. Tension was palpable.

The relationship between the Illini and both the Central Illinois and Chicago media are reflections of the media relations regime that was in place from 1992-2011. Both sides responded completely rationally and understandably to the incentives they were given during that period.

I hope there are some changes in the future. But big city outlets are always going to be a bit tougher, that's just the culture.

The fans are a part of that culture too, and that's often overlooked.

Illinois sports have been bad for a very long time. Local outlets have been pretty darn nice about it all along. Chicago media, meanwhile, don't feel they owe the school the same obligation, and are more judgmental and harsher.

Yet, the same fans who all want the school to improve athletically complain about the Chicago media being "mean" roughly 10 times as much as they do local media being soft.

FWIW, if you're not a Bears fan (like me, Illlinois grad but born/raised in Denver), this is probably even more exciting. Because you see the resume for what it is without the emotional baggage of the tail end of Lovie's tenure in Chicago. I know as a Bronco diehard I would have been slow to warm up to, for example, a Josh McDaniels hire at Illinois because, even though that would look good on paper, the guy is the football antichrist. Well, in my opinion.

I'd love to know how this all went down behind closed doors? Did Whitman call Lovie and say let me give you an offer you can't refuse? And I am surprised nothing was ever hinted at by ANYBODY. Did Whitman contact Lovie right after he got hired? So many questions you could ask.

That is an excellent point. I'm not a Bears fan either and what this looks like to me is an adequate to above average coach, who is beloved by his players and has many NFL contacts and seems well respected. He almost hit the pinnacle in his coaching career and then like most NFL coaches not named Belichek he eventually wore out his welcome.

All in all just an absolute grand slam for a program in our condition.

My thoughts exactly. I'm a Packers fan, and I always thought Lovie was an excellent coach. Anyone who could coach a Rex Grossman quarterbacked team to the super bowl is a genius in my book. I was thrilled when the Bears released him because I was pretty sure they'd get worse...and I was right. :) I'm beyond thrilled with this news.

Thank Ron Turner.

I don't see a lot of difference between John Fox and Lovie outside of Fox choosing a more stable franchise who was able to resurrect one of the greatest QB's of all time.

Lovie went to Tampa, Fox got Peyton in Denver

Only 46 head coaches in the history of the NFL have more victories than Lovie.

Obviously there are a lot of factors that play into head coaching victories, but not too freakin bad for a program in our shape

Are we sure he wasn't on that flight and that Whitman wasn't a "diversion" while Lovie slipped out the back door.

That's probably the stance of most other team's boards.

Laughing at us for firing Cubit. Calling us a disaster.

To not believing there's any way possible Lovie actually comes here.

To being mildly impressed when reports say it looks like that's exactly what's about to happen.

If the OSU is mildly impressed with your hire you have hit a homer for sure.

Even the Michigan fans are arguing Harbaugh vs Lovie.

We have definitely rocked the Big 10
