Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

I was too confident having Illinois covering the points today. Elite teams don't lose this game. Let's see how they regroup, but they are not a Top Ten team without TS. This is the damn proof. One game at a time.

no adjustments on defense after halftime, they continued to own us in the paint
Our switching defense got the best of us today. Young really good with penetration and then Reese working to gain position when needed.
Shot terrible in the second half
What's with all the jump passes (recipe for diaster/turnovers)
We were leaving our man too early in the first half in the paint which led to easy paint buckets
28 points by Young tells you what the game plan was and WE did not make adjustments.
Hard to play with 7 and the Thursday game took something out of our legs.
2 nd best defense on 2 pointers in the nation got schooled
They start out 0 for 8 and we built a lead thanks to Goode and then Luke goes 15 min with out shooting.

I like that we tried Dainja and Hawkins on the floor at the same time, but when both are on the floor, why isn’t one of them parked near or under the basket. There were a couple times with both of them playing when MD got an easy dunk or layup.

Because too many 'shots' were more like throws, Pru. Anything in transition was running and launching and clanging off the rim.

Add to that the terrible threes (after the opening 5 minutes) and 6 for 16 on layups (pre-garbage time) and the shooting was off the charts bad.

One could say that and you did.........IMO , it was more poor angles , tired legs and some of it was good blocks by the twerps.......The twerps probably just played their best game of the year today , and we played one of our worst games of the year.....

In a game where Guerrier struggled the whole way through, Hawkins was in foul trouble, and both of them looked exhausted at points, Dain still gets what, 9 minutes? Hansberry with 0. DGL with 0. I guess at this point it's clear what Brad thinks of the bench.
Hansberry was a medical DNP

Brad, postgame radio:

We had "no pop" on the defensive end
Didn't make layups
Abysmal on offensive glass first half
Should have used Dre & Nicco more
You can't win in this league by 'just showing up'
"Back to work..."

You can't miss that many open layups and shots in the second half and expect to win. And that is just offensively. Defensively, that was the worst Underwood led team defensively I have seen since last year. Have to address that going forward
BU just said we were 8-25 on layups........layups.......................
said it was the first time in a long time that we didn't guard on defense..............
brought up we maybe should have played DGL & Moretti some.......
give fairyland a lot of credit......................
Dain got 7 points , but blew 3 screen and rolls on D.....................
I told the team in the locker room we just joined a list of top ten ranked teams that lost to an unranked team.....that's being honest and about the only way to look at it.......

On to nu and get our mojo back............

52-24 advantage in the paint. 52-24.
And what were we 6/25 on layups or whatever? Couldn’t get much of anything to fall in the 2nd half. They killed us all day inside and our rotations and ball stopping were really poor.

It’s a bad loss. No other way to sugarcoat it.

Maryalnd careering it against Illinois per usual. With that being said, we deserved to lose today. Just a pitiful performance on all accounts
Easy to career when you are given everything you want offensively and not even forced to work on the defensive end. Just bad from us.

A few takeaways:
The hypobaric chambers are going to be in high demand for recovery. Guys were just gassed. I despise a 6-man rotation.

Jahmir Young and Julian Reese 2-man ball was too much for us. Tiny quick guards are our kryptonite if we don't bullyball them on the other end. Young just has our number.

Harmon and QG were just OFF their game.

Luke had a few wild, overly physical plays. Grabbed a guy (first foul) and pushed a guy on a breakaway. Tired legs = silly plays. Both almost looked dirty.

Dain gave a spark, but he's not the answer.

Sad to let this one get away, especially at home, but when you lose your best offensive and one of your best defensive players, these games will happen. ON TO THE NEXT!

I hate it but that performance really took a flamethrower to my expectations and therefore excitement for the season. This is a very bad Maryland team and they will continue to be very bad. If we had lost to Michigan State I’d be sad but could rationalize it. This? No way to rationalize. Destroyed my belief that the strength of this team was avoiding these types of losses with the balance they have.
Not sure how bad the Terps are or just underachieving so far. Near the end of the telecast, the announcers mentioned that in the preseason media polling, Maryland was picked to finish 3rd (and that was higher than the Illini). So how bad are they really. Maybe we took them too lightly too.
